1. what exactly is it and what does it mean as far as TTC is concerned?
2. does it mean IVF?
3. What symptoms are there to possibly indicate PCOS?
The reason Im asking is bc i have an appt on Monday w. my dr bc i have VERY long cycles and some girls on TTC board have said something about PCOS so i wanted to know more about from first hand experience. I cant always trust what i read online

Re: If you have PCOS...
Definitely a great link!
Long cycles (and inconsistent cycles) can SOMETIMES be a red flag that you MIGHT have PCOS. Don't jump to any conclusions just yet. You are doing the right thing - go to the doctor, have the proper tests done (cycle day 3 blood work, sonogram) and take it from there. PCOS is treatable but will require fertility treatments.

There is no definitive test for PCOS. Just indicators. If you meet more than 2 or 3, you may be considered having PCOS. This is usually diagnosed through US and bloodwork. The website I Mentioned before is very useful.

Re: If you have PCOS...
This is a good link. This is the other board I visit on a regular basis. PCOS info
HTH! Please ask us any questions you may have. To answer your 1 question- NO - PCOS does not definitely mean IVF.... I'm going thru IUI but some people I know have done clomid and gotten PG, others thru IUI and others thru IVF.

Ditto on what all the other ladies said!
Plus my own answers:
1) Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Its hard to define. Its a very broad "syndrome." For most it means that the ovaries produce a lot of follicles that don't mature, and ovulation occurs infrequently or not at all. So in terms of TTC it means you have less chances to conceive because you are not ovulating like a "regular" woman.
2) No it does not mean IVF. There are lots of things you can do before IVF. For most PCOSers ovulating is the goal. Once that happens, for many PCOSers, you have as much of a chance of getting pregnant as anyone else.
3) There are lots of symptoms, but they are not consistent from patient to patient. Many of the common ones are: - long cycles/irregular or no periods - obesity - unwanted hair - "string of pearls" on the ovaries (can only be seen by ultrasound)
But like I said some women with PCOS have all the symptoms, some have a few, and some have none at all. Its a very confusing disease. You'll need to have CD3 bloodwork and sonogram to make a diagnosis.
Good luck!

Re: If you have PCOS...
Just know that if you have PCOS, it's very manageable. I cried and cried when my diagnosis came back. But I really got myself all worked up for no good reason. There are SO many different options and treatments that would be available to you.
Good luck, keep us posted!

Re: If you have PCOS...
1. what exactly is it and what does it mean as far as TTC is concerned?
It is when you don't ovulate regularly, your ovaries never release the eggs because they form a "shell" that hardens and doesn't release the egg when it should. Generally when an internal sono is done, you can see all the "eggs" in the ovaries that haven't been released. As far as TTC, it means you should be on Clomid and/or Metformin to help adjust your hormone levels and allow the eggs to release.
2. does it mean IVF?
Definitely not, unless there are other issues most women can get PG with just hormone therapy.
3. What symptoms are there to possibly indicate PCOS?
Excess facial hair Lack of periods Weight gain in belly area Acne "strings of pearls" in ovaries
