If you have a child in Kindergarten..
Is it true they can sometimes get 2-3 hrs of homework a night? I was talking to my SIL and she said my nephew sometimes gets 2-3 hrs of HW, projects plus reading 10 mins every night. I was curious to know if this is the norm? Thanks

We get less than an hour of homework and we're expected to read at least 20 minutes a night. (We get "extra" homework packets for the month that we can complete at our own accord.)
We're half-day, so I don't know if that changes the homework expectations.

Not sure, but mine doesn't. He might get a worksheet once a week that's pretty simple, or a project here and there. He can't read so reading time wouldn't work.

No. And I taught kindergarten too and there is NO way they would get HW like that. When I taught 5th grade they didn't even get HW like that.
My daughter is in kindergarten now, she gets maybe 10-15 minutes a night.
ETA......we have to read at night too but I don't really count that as HW since I've been reading to ny daughter every single night for at least fifteen minutes since she was a baby.

Last year towards the middle/end of the year, yes. My kindergarten age son had 3 hours of home work. It was a horrible for everyone.

We definitely get more than 15 minutes of homework a night. My DS will have a math worksheet (Go!Math - double sided), 2 letter/handwriting worksheets, we're expected to work on our sight words (sometimes there's a worksheet for that) and then the reading. That's no including any extra worksheets/projects.
We're given a weekly packet and told what to complete each day and it's to be handed in on Friday.

Neither one of my kids had that much homework. If the teacher was sending home 2-3 hours of homework a night, I would not tolerate that AT ALL. I think that much homework is completely unacceptable.

Dc gets a packet of HW for the week, and finishes it in 10 minutes. It's barely anything, But it seems the teacher has them do so much work in school. Dc comes home w tons of work they do in school. I think it's great use of school hours

My DS isn't starting school for 2 years so I was concerned but, this post makes me feel a bit better.

Well there sometimes is a project and I could see it taking a long time especially if you have all week to do it and you put it off until the last minute. But much of it is how long it takes your child to do whatever the activity. Early last year my DD had to cut pictures of items that begins with a certain letter. The finding, cutting and gluing took a while but the sight words on note cards or math pages or later on journals and spelling tests were much faster. We had a week to do the one or two projects over the year. So maybe 10-20 mins a night but some parents put it off and said their kids did it the last night and it yook a while.
We had 2-4 math sheets a night, a few sight words or later spelling words, either journal writing or sentences. One book home a week in their reading level (separate from book exchange). Our teacher requests at least 10 mins of reading a night. I don't include it as homework bc we would read regardless. As far as how long it takes depends on the child.

Wow three hours is crazy. I am not trying to be snarky just genuinely curious what your district is giving to K students that takes that long.
I know my DD had book report journal type writing but no where near 3 hours worth at the end of last year. (We picked a book and night 1 -5-6 sentences about the beginning of the book with pictures, night 2 thd middle, night 3 the end, night 4 your favorite character or scene in the book.)

No teacher, regardless of Common Core, would give a 5 yr old child 3 hrs of HW. It's not even feasible to expect a child that age to concentrate that long and complete that amount of work after a full day of school. Aside from that, by the time my DD gets home, she only has just over 3 hrs until bed and she's exhausted when she gets off the bus. NO way I'd make her do HW like that, if it even existed.
I have many, many teacher friends and acquaintances................none would give three hrs of HW, especially in Kindergarten.

Ditto on both counts. That just cannot be true! DS gets about 15 minutes per night ( math and writing practice). Then he just reviews his sight words and familiar books. If it took more than 1/2 hour I'd have a problem with it.

As a teacher, and a parent, that is absolutely unacceptable. I would have a MAJOR problem with this. My son is in K and has 10-15 min (if that) a night. My son was in a different K class last year, and the same for him 10-15 minutes. When I taught K, it was the same thing. I used to tell parents if it takes longer than that, to just stop, and send me in a note.

There is a tremendous difference between how long it takes a particular child to complete the HW and what's actually assigned. What's generally assigned is no more than a few minutes of work. I would be a little concerned if it took hours for my child to do what is actually assigned.
My DD gets a few handwriting sheets, a pretty easy math sheet, etc. Her teacher only assigns one thing per night and it's really for their benefit and nothing more..............none of the work needs to be handed in.

It was pure insanity by the end of the year. This is a public school. We were all crying by the end. It would take my DS 3 hours. Perhaps he should have done this quicker, but it was honestly 15 pages of work a night. Way too much for a kindergarten child.
This year my son has a much better teacher. He does 20 minutes of reading, two pages of homework boxes, 4 pages of math dittos, reviews spelling words (8 of them are tested weekly), and reviews math facts. Homework takes him about 40 minutes for everything including the roughly 20 minutes of reading.

ETA - Speaking as both a former teacher and parent, I just wouldn't do it. As a weeks worth of work, sure. But I would take issue with a 5 yr old having that much work daily. Sounds like a HW happy teacher, I NEVER assigned that much at any point in the year when I taught.
