So where can a teacher pick up another $20 grand during the year like your saying? Coaching pays a few thousand, and if you saw the hours they put in they're almost better off working for minimum wage, and tutoring jobs are hard to come by these days. And where can someone make an extra 10-15 grand? Working at a summer camp?

My friend tutors on the side and makes $120 an hour. If you tutor 3 hours a week on average, that is over $15k.

I'm guessing they tutor math, science or SAT and I KNOW it's in a VERY wealthy district. What about everyone else?

Anyway, these discussions show that the state doesn't care about education as much as Long Islanders, which is why we have the best schools, which makes high property values, but also among the highest taxes.

If things continue the way they seem to be going, our taxes for schools may be lower, but I know they will be higher in other areas, especially incarceration.

The 1%ers have us fighting like crabs boiling in a pot, who think the other crabs are the problem, while ignoring the real problems they caused.

I'll get off my Chat Icon for a little while now, especially since I'm sort of a new poster.

It isn't in a very wealthy district, but they do tutor in Math.
I am sorry, but this discussion has gone on far too long. If teachers don't make enough money, find a second job like the rest of us. I make a salary, and if I need to make more money, I try to give more lessons. It is a sacrifice of time to my family, but it is what i have to do. Every job is necessary and no one is taking away from what a teacher does, but things need to change or else the youth today will not be able to live on Long Island. I love this place and I don't want to leave and I do everything I can to stay here, taxpayers are just looking for some help. If there is a way to knock my taxes down while paying a teacher more, I'm all for it!

Re: If you could suggest a salary for a teacher...

Are you sick of highly paid teachers?

Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or10 months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do - babysit!

We can get that for less than minimum wage.

That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan-- that equals 6 1/2 hours).

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children. Now how many students do they teach in a day...maybe 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day.

However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.

LET'S SEE....

That's $585 X 180= $105,300

per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).

What about those special

education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an

hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year.

Wait a minute -- there's

something wrong here! There sure is!

The average teacher's salary

(nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days

= $277.77/per day/30

students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student--a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) WHAT A DEAL!!!!

I must be a glutton for punishment to keep reading this thread. My head is throbbing from all the bologna written Chat Icon

Talk about being misinformed.

There are no more rubber rooms.

NYC teachers must complete a masters w/i 5 yrs or they are terminated.

You must have a DOUBLE masters to get top pay (at your salary step) and unlike LI you cannot just take classes and get raise. At 60 credits above your BA you are maxed.

I remember my high school english teacher busting her arse during her last year b/c she knew she had to complete the masters or else she would be canned.

I actually thought these were universal rules, for schools everywhere.

I took out the stupidity part b/c I don't think people are necessarily stupid. I only call myself stupid. cuz that is something I KNOW. Chat Icon

The stupid part comes in bc what I wrote has been said on this thread already. I reiterated it for c l a r i t yChat Icon

To me, it is irritating to keep seeing the same people repeat the same nonsense once someone has explained that said nonsense is incorrect.

For example, I may think xyz about the bar exam. If 5 laywers explain to me it is actually abc I am going to stop rehashing xyz under the assumption that is is incorrect, kwim? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: If you could suggest a salary for a teacher...

I'd have no problem with teachers getting paid an unlimited, sky high salary AS LONG AS it was based on MERIT - like a lot of other jobs are. I know that this world is far from a meritocracy but I am friends with a lot of teachers and quite frankly don't understand how some get paid a ton and do the absolute minimum and some get paid peanuts and go over and beyond.

Just for the record you will find that MANY teachers get second jobs...and some even third jobs "Just like the rest of us." (Speaking from personal experience.)

I'm not sure I totally understand your question, but we're not talking about a starting salary. We're talking about a salary after ten years. 40K might be good right out of grad school, but with ten years of experience? Not so much. And less than $1000 a year in property taxes??? Is that even possible? I guess probably in North Dakota.

I understand her question.

For me, let's say my taxes are 11 grand a year. 8k of those taxes goes towards the school taxes.

are the school taxes on LI high due to the salaries of teachers on the island (versus other states)? or is it a bunch of different factors combined?

I'd love to know as well....I know a good portion of my taxes goes towards the school....but how much of it is for buses, after school activities, sports, teacher salaries, etc?

yes - I have many people I know who live out of state who's property taxes are that low. I was wondering if the reason that taxes are so high is here is because teachers are paid a high salary. I didn't know they made that much. I'd be happy to be making 60k per year after being at a job for 10 years, didn't realize many made close to 90k per year...

LET'S SEE....

That's $585 X 180= $105,300

per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).

What about those special

education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an

hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year.

Wait a minute -- there's

something wrong here! There sure is!

The average teacher's salary

(nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days

= $277.77/per day/30

students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student--a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) WHAT A DEAL!!!!

Someone should post this another time so we can continue to read it over and over again.

What an outstanding suggestion!

I'm sorry Chat Icon That was me. I just couldn't help but comment on the person who alluded to the fact that teachers don't need more than a BA and 3x more teachers are in rubber rooms than classrooms.
