I witnessed something really sad today in the store...

It made me angry, it made me sad and it made me really take a good look at myself as a mom.

I was shopping in Target for some pjs and other things, and there was this woman and her 12 year old-ish daughter shopping. At first I thought nothign of them, but then the mother turns to the daughter, who was just browsing around, and says, "Just pick something already you stupid b----!" And I couldn't believe my ears. Here I am, within arm's reach with my baby, and this woman is speaking to her daughter that way. The daughter just replied, "Okay, fine." And then the mother did it again, said, "You're a f---ing little b----!"
So here I was, standing there with my daughter. My precious, beautiful, amazing daughter who I try so hard to do the right thing by, and this woman was talking to HER beautiful, amazing, precious daughter like that.
I'm so sad. I'm so sickly, madly, angrily sad for that little girl. And it was like some surreal moment standing there witnessing this, then looking down at my own flesh and blood, thinking, "Oh my god, how could anyone ever talk to their child that way?"
I'm just so upset over this. And reading Jamie's post about feeling like a bad mother made me stop and really think about what I saw again today. So, for those of you who worry, like me, that you might be a bad mother, just do the best you can to take care of your children and protect them from monsters like I saw today, and you will always be a good mom in my book.

You know growing up in my Brady bunch family I thought that only nice, deserving women got to be moms. Then I became an adult and realized that nasty, undeserving women got to be moms too. Chat Icon

How do you know it was her mother? Chat Icon I'm just saying, it could be a step-mother, relative, baby sitter...It's not right in ANY case, but it may not be the mom treating her this way.

Hmm, probably from her calling her mom. I don't know, that usually gives it away, ya know?

That's really so sad. And so sad that so many loving women who want kids and would treat them with so much love, can't have them. Chat Icon

Re: I witnessed something really sad today in the store...

very sad. that kind of thing just breaks my heart, especially now that I'm a mom. You are so right about us being so hard on ourselves (unnecessarily.) There are children that have it so much worse than our kids on our worst days.

Oh, I did. I said to Ava, while looking at the woman, "Come on Ava, we only like to be around NICE mommies!" Not that it made a difference. But whatever.

I am sickened by that "mother"- if you could call her one by the way she treated her daughter. I can't believe you need to take a driver's test to drive a car but don't need to take some kind of parenting class to have children.
