I now understand why people do it

I had a scary thought tonight.

I'm realizing why you hear so many stories of kittens and puppies being abandoned in dumpsters, or thrown out of moving vehicles. I'm starting to see WHY we have such a problem with things like this in our country.

It's because there aren't that many other options.

I'm thinking about everything I have been through to find these kittens good, loving homes: I've emailed everyone I can possibly reach, I've contacted rescue organizations...the list is endless. It's no wonder people abandon their animals--even someone who WANTS to do the right thing might not be able to.

I contacted 3 different rescue organizations. Two had an "adoption freeze" and weren't accepting new kittens. The 3rd, the Humane Society, requires 2 rounds of shots for each kitten before they will take them. I'm gong to take them tomorrow, but it's going to cost me $300. So that they can take the kittens from me and adopt them out!

I'm just realizing how few options there really are for people who actually WANT to do the right thing by these animals. Chat Icon

I think people who do this are just plain coldhearted, horrific and couldn't care less if there once "beloved" pet lived or died. A lot of times this is done because the byb has no more use for the female breeding machine or the family just wanted a cute puppy, not a big dog. They just don't want to be botherd with doing the right thing. Pets are living a breathing things and should not be disposed as garbage.

I would rather pay the fee and know the animal has a chance of going to good home then dump the pet in the garbage or throw it out of a car.
Heck, I would even do a drop and run at a no kill shelter(have done this numerous times).

Now if we can get a few more people to cover that other $200 would that be a problem?? Then can this be done?? Who ever reads this post.. If you can (dont even think about it if you cant) please we only need 200 more.. Post the amount you can send and lets add it up..

I will send the other $100. No joke. Great suggestion Diana! Thanksgiving is coming and I am very thankful this year for many reasons. I would like to share my thanks by helping MrsRivera out.Chat Icon

I only wish I could have done what MrsRivera has done. Even though I have done that in the past (help strays) my DH is so allergic I could have never done what she did or what we did while I was growing up (take in strays).

Just yesterday in Petco I put a $20 gift card in the donation box for the strays they have for adoption in their store. I drop $ in there everytime b/c it breaks my heart.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I really hope they are guaranteeing her they will take them. Beth, are they guaranteeing you they will take the kittens if you have them vaccinated? Just please be sure of that, I worry they still won't take them.

And FM those of us who would like to help out your address and we will send you our donations to cover the cost to vaccinate those poor babies. Chat Icon

Re: I now understand why people do it

Sorry, I am just getting to read this now.

I am absolutely taken aback by your responses. I actually cried when I read them (pregnancy hormones Chat Icon). I am so touched by your generosity and support.

The GOOD news is that our cleaning lady's sister works for the Charlotte Humane Society. So she pulled some strings for us and they guaranteed us a spot. But it's really sad that if it weren't for that personal connection, there wouldn't be anyplace for these babies except the pound. Chat Icon

We made the appointment to get the kittens vaccinated tomorrow. They need two rounds of shots...tomorrow they will get their 1st round and we can do the 2nd round in 2 weeks. It puts us in a bit of a rough spot because we are having the new carpet installed in the nursery on Monday. So we're going to have to keep them in the adjoining bathroom until they get their 2nd round of shots.

Again, I want to thank all of you for your generosity. It means a lot to me--especially because I'm out on disability and because we have a baby coming in 6 weeks!

You guys are the best!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Heck, I would even do a drop and run at a no kill shelter(have done this numerous times).

I agree. the fee is the least we can do for an animal we are about to give up. My parent's neighbor abandoned his two cats when he moved. He just up and left them on the porch. Neighbors adopted them, but they were lucky

The other thing people don't do is spay and neuter these cats and dogs (especially cats who more often than dogs tend to roam). This is one of the biggest reasons for overpopulation of shelters and rescue groups.

I'm sorry but if you can't find a home for the cats that is absolutely no reason to justify dumping the cat and letting it fend for itself, especially with the weather in the north east.

I am sure the cat you are trying so dilligently to find a home for will be so much better because of your efforts. I can see how frustrating it can be, but you are a better person for making the effort than for giving up and dumping the cat. Plus, you can confidently say that you did everything to help save your cat from god knows what fate if you'd just left it on the porch, like my parents neighbor.

ETA: OMG - just read the rest of the posts. How wonderful and generous of LIF posters!!! I wish I could also be generous but I just got laid off and should be conserving funds for rent. However, I love to see stuff like this. It's very encouraging!

I do just want to clarify one thing: I don't support or agree with ANYONE that "disposes" of their animals irresponsibly. But I will admit that when I hear stories like that, I think to myself, "How could these people do something like that when there are so many other options?". What I was trying to get across in my original post is that there are FAR fewer options than I previously believed.

Most of you know me since I'm a frequent poster, but I do want others to know that I would never do anything like that. Chat Icon
