I need NAP advice PLEASE!

Ladies I need some nap advice.

I’ve posted about it before, but I’m lost. Jacen is 13+ months. He was taking 2 naps a day and for weeks/months he’s been fighting naps. Some days he won’t take an afternoon nap even when he’s tired. Sometimes he has fought the a.m. nap, but most often it is the afternoon nap.

We then try to transition him to 1 nap a day instead and that just went badly. The first day he slept for 3 hours. Then it got shorter and shorter. Then he started waking up at night and waking up early in the a.m. too.

So back to 2 naps we went. Things were good. We found that when we woke him up after an hour and 30 minutes in the morning, he’d go for the afternoon nap no problem. But this whole past week (my dh has been home with him) he has not taken an afternoon nap. So we put him to bed early at 6:30pm (normal is 7:30pm). He STTN, thank god.

So what do we do? Also when my MIL, SIL or MCL916 watch him… he will only nap for 45 minutes for them. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just feel like his naps have been wacky for weeks now and I don’t know how to fix it. Any advice would be great. TIA! Chat Icon

Move to 1 nap, and an earlier bedtime.

but for how long on the earlier bedtime?

And if he's getting up at 6:30am normally, what time should i put him down for the 1 nap- by 12?

Re: I need NAP advice PLEASE!

If he's resisting the afternoon nap, move the morning nap later- perhaps 11:30/12. Before dropping to 1 nap, my oldest woke about 6am and went down for the night at about 7. We moved her bedtime to 6pm and that helped. Most babies give up the morning nap- but not all. My oldest got rid of her afternoon nap and her schedule was:

5:30/6 wake up
10 am nap (about 2 hours)
bed: 6pm

She was a disaster by 6pm though, and putting her down earlier was ridiculous to me. SO- we recently were able to move her nap later to 12noon.

Now her schedule is:
6/7 wake
12 nap (about 1.5-2 hours)
7pm down for bed.

Ugh i hate this, especially since it's summer!!!! If it was winter... no problem. But there's so many things going on and it would be nice to go out to dinner the 3 of us every once in a while, but he'd never make it to 7pm right now. Chat Icon

I'm just not sure if 1 1/2 hours is enough sleep for him during the day. He usually sleeps 2-3 hours with the 2 naps (well before Chat Icon).

I guess we'll have to try something different for a while. It's just hard with DH's rotating schedule and me working FT. When DH doesn't watch ds, we rely on SIL/MIL to watch him.

Re: I need NAP advice PLEASE!

DS started daycare at 12 months and the nap wackiness you describe started around here, too! I eventually resigned myself to the fact that he had a solid year of great sleep and I could no longer control each and every second of his day. So, he began to sleep for about an hour at daycare (about 11:30 -- 12:30) and bed by about 6:30 during the week. On the weekends, DS would sleep for almost 3 hours and then was in bed by 7:30.

I don't know if our story will help, but I hope things get better at your house!

It does, but i didn't even get a year of good sleep first. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just really don't want it to interfere with night time sleep. For that week that we tried the 1 nap, he was waking up at night and waking early too. I don't want to go back to that. Chat Icon

Re: I need NAP advice PLEASE!

This was tough transition for us too (I remember your last 2 to 1 nap post)----if he seems like he is doing okay and not overtired, I would slowly move the nap later (since you said he is only taking the am)---like if you normally put him down at 10, try 10:15 or 10:30 for a couple days and so on and so forth. DS is now on one nap, he is up at 6:30, down for his nap btwn 11:30 and 12 and sleeps atleast 2 hours, bed at 7pm. GL!! Chat Icon

Re: I need NAP advice PLEASE!

What time does he wake? Could he be teething and that is affecting his sleep? I agree with a PP that said push his morning nap later around 11:30 and then see if he will nap around 3, then maybe you can push bedtime to 7:30?

Nah he's not teething. Plus luckily (knock on wood), teething has never affected his sleeping at night.

See the problem we have is that if Jacen goes for a nap at 3, then he won't go to bed on time. He's not one to take a late nap and still go to bed the normal time. Then if he doesn't go to bed on time, he gets less sleep at night because he still wakes up at the same time every morning, regardless of how late he is up (gets up at 6:30am normally).

Yeah i guess we'll have to try this. Last time we tried, we had a lot going on and so it was hard to make sure he was in for a nap at the right time, so i'm sure that didn't help either.
