I KNOW I was not the wrong one in this situation! SO MAD!
I was exiting the subway and I noticed an older woman standing against the wall, holding her throat and looking concerned. I got to the top and thought to myself....what if she needs help. So I turned around, went back down, and VERY politely said "excuse me, are you alright?" She FLIPPED and starting yelling at me "do I look that bad? That is SO insulting. How DARE you. Just go, I'm waiting for someone. Just leave."
Well, maybe it's the pregnancy hormones but tears welled up in my eyes and I said back to her "excuse me, but if I was standing against the wall holding my throat and someone asked if I was okay I would say thank you."
She kept yelling at me and making ME feel bad so I said to her "what the fluck is wrong with people today? Are you for real?" And then stomped off.
Like, really? I tried to do a nice thing and got YELLED at like I had committed a terrible atrocity. Is it so awful that I approached a stranger and asked if they were alright? She wasn't off to the side, or watching the turnstile, she was against the wall right by the bottom of the second set of stairs, holding her throat. This is a large station with plenty of benches on the upper level, so is it THAT odd that I was concerned???

You did a nice thing. She probably had a miserable day (or a miserable life) and just took it out on you.
I'm sorry that happened. Shake it off and don't let it dissuade you from being the concerned and loving person that you are in the future.

Sounds like she has been off her meds for awhile.

I'm so sorry. I know how you feel, as you wonder if you should just not do this again. This reminds me of when I was standing on line at the bank. The line was long and this older man behind me had a cane and seemed to be struggling. I was ahead of him and when they called me next, I asked him if he would like to go. He started yelling at me, "why would I go? You are next. Why ask me to go?" It literally got me upset. I was having an ok day and trying to do something nice and it turned into something that upset my day. Honestly, I probably won't do it again for fear someone will get annoyed. Unbelieveable!!

Definitely wasn't you. You did a good thing. She should've been thankful you cared enough to say something even if nothing was wrong.

You did a good thing.
But as someone who looks like she's struggling doing most things, and as someone who uses canes, crutches, walkers, etc. to get around, I can see the other side too.
If someone asks me if I want to go ahead in line, I will politely decline unless there are extenuating circumstances.
I've learned to be comfortable asking for help, those who are older, newly disabled, overwhelmed aren't as comfortable and take offense where none is intended.

I don't think she sounds mentally ill at all. Not everybody is sick, some people are just b!tches.
Don't let it stop you from doing it again though, maybe next time someone will really need your help. At least that's what I keep trying to tell myself.

I actually had the mentally ill thought, but I'm a mental health professional and can usually spot it pretty quickly. This woman knew exactly what she was saying. She was claiming I insulted her by insinuating that she 'looked bad' when I asked if she was alright.
I'm feeling better about it this morning. I was just so taken aback by the whole situation.

i swear people are wack these days.. you can't even offer the help them because you don't know if you will end up "offending" them.. ugh..

It's her problem, not yours. I would have done the same thing. Feel happy knowing you did the right thing, are a good person and have a good life. It seems that maybe her life is not so great. Feel sorry for her and move on
