I think this is very helpful, but I want to just add that this type of CIO doesn't work with ALL babies. My DS would FREAK if we went in there, so we had to just stay out. It was tough, but we thought CIO didn't work for us b/c we'd try this way and it DID end up working, but on DS' terms.

I agree. I don't go in there either. It's hard, but it works for us.

Re: i just want to help all CIO moms....

I have to thank nrthshgrl for bumping this. I am not a "new" mom, I am a mom again but apparently I have forgotten everything there is to know about babies since having DS1 Chat Icon
I followed Summer advice last night and it WORKED!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
I only had to go into DS's room twice (OK, the first time doesn't even count since I wasn't sure I could do it so I gave DS a little nibble (I am BF) Chat Icon ) but after that, I went in after 2 minutes, rubbed DS back and did the whole mommy loves you but you need to go to sleep now Chat Icon . I watched the clock and he would whimper a little but never went a full 5 minutes before falling asleep until 7:30 AM!!!
I have to say, I wasn't personally a big fan of CIO because I hate to hear my baby cry. After last night, I realized that I don't need to just up as soon as I hear him cry. Even though it seems like an eternity in my head, he was really only crying for 2 - 3 minutes!

Re: i just want to help all CIO moms....

thanks for bumping bar- lol, bc i have to take my OWN advice soon!!!

yup, emerson is going to be ONE on saturday, and i have to ferber her again...

what happened was she was ferbered at 6 months, and it worked great....

a few weeks later, she got her first tooth, in whichcase i -obviously- gave in and cuddled and let her know she was okay....

so after a 3-5 nites that tooth finally broke through, i was going to "re-ferber"....which takes only a nite for them to get it again....

well, then she got a little cold, so i didnt....

and by the time she was done being stuffy and stuff, we had bought a house and i knew i would have to referber AGAIN, so i just kept going in to her- i didnt want to ferber again, and then move into the house a month later and keep re-ferbering...

LOL- so we move in, i wait 3 weeks for her to adjust and stuff...and went to ferber and she got the 2 top teeth!!!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i mean, what a NIGHTMARE!!!!!

lol- so i was going to ferber last week, but then decided, ill give her until her 1st birthday, then i am DONE!!!

LOL- so my point to replying to this is the fact that you are going to run into some problems where you will be going in to them for sicknesses and teeth, and you just have to re-do the cycle again- but it literally only takes a nite for them to get it.....

anyway, thats it....

ill let you know how emerson does!!!!!

Re: i just want to help all CIO moms....

Good advice, but how did you do CIO if you have more than once kid...especially if they wake at night.

Wouldnt that wake DC #1? Doing it right before bed wouldnt be that bad because I could put DC1 in later but during the night, im sure DC1 would wake if DC2 was crying so much

How did you do it?

am interested in the answer to this - the advice from the OP is awesome - assuming you have one child, or the second child (if you have one) is older or a deep sleeper.

We have twins, in the same room, and unfortunately, they are light sleepers. Letting one CIO wakes the other. Any tips on how to manage this? No one has seemed to be able to touch this yet. Chat Icon

I am no expert but I would think that over time, the one who is NOT crying will learn to block out and sleep through the one that is Chat Icon

good luck

I think my sister separated her twins for a few nights when one was crying / one wasn't

wish that was an option (separating them)

we live in a 2BR co-op - so the girls share a room - no place to put the non-crying one.

I mean, we could bring one of them in bed with us or out in the living room, but that opens up a whole separate issue.

If you cannot separate them, I am sure they will get used to the crying......and not wake from it, EVENTUALLY...not sure how long that will take but it is your only option, right>? aside from not doing CIO at all...I never did CIO with my dd until she forced me to at 12 months (she did not want to be rocked to sleep anymore) and she is and always was a great sleeper

CIO is not the ONLY option, although I know it works great for some people

Chat Icon good luck

yeah, we'll work it out eventually - we're not believers/supporters of hardcore CIO anyway - there are other options - just have to hit on the right one.

Re: i just want to help all CIO moms....

What if DS is in the same room with me and DH? We have a condo, and his crib is in our room. He goes down fine, sometimes wakes in the middle of the night looking for his paci. DH wants me to get it for him, I think he should be able to soothe himself back to sleep. What should I do?

Re: i just want to help all CIO moms....

Thank you for this! DD is 14 months old and STILL Wakes every 2-3 hours EVERY NIGHT. She nurses and goes right back to sleep.

I'm not sure if this method will work or if we should just stay out (she seems to cry more and harder when we go in and then leave).

She is teething so badly too but nothing seems to help...
I've tried advil/teething tablets/orajel combo
I've tried rubbing benadryl ON her gums (Ped said it acts as a topical pain killer...hmmmmm)
I've even given her tylenol cold med when she was sick and she didn't sleep any better with that!Chat Icon

I'm so glad this was bumped... great timing because I was planning to start CIO tonight and work on it over the weekend with my 9-month-old DD who MUST be rocked to sleep at naptime, bedtime, and if she wakes in the middle of the night (which isn't a lot, but she is totally unable to get herself back to sleep)
