I had my baby! Introducing...
Grant William!!!!
 
Born on 11/18/10 @ 8lb, 5 oz. 20 inches.
He is the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me and DH and we are in love with him more and more everyday
My labor, however, is another story entirely! While I avoided an induction by going into labor last Wednesday night, it ended up taking 21 grueling hours to finally give birth to DS. I absolutely love the hospital we delivered at, the doctors were great and the private rooms are amazing...I could never have it any other way. My labor was very slow, I was admitted to the hospital at 10pm Wednesay and by Thursday early afternoon was only 3 cm dialated. I stayed at 4-5 cm for a good 5 hours (at this point my dr was contemplating a c-section) and then suddenly jumped to 8 cm.... when my epidural suddenly failed on the left side of my body (this can apparantly be common). I was in agony for over an hour since the anesthesiologist had 2 emergencies to attend to. Finally at 9 cm I had the epidural redone and got some relief, but I stopped dialating for another 3 hours. You can't start to push until at least 9.5cm for risk of tearing very badly so I had to hold back, even though DS's head was putting so much pressure on me. Finally I hit 9.5 and my dr helped me get to 10 while I pushed. I was so exhausted and wanted LO to be ok so bad that I once I started pushing, he came out in half an hour The nurses and dr's were shocked. Thank god for the continous epidural drip (even though it had to be redone). I have a low pain tolerance and could not have done without it. We also had a slight scare early on in the labor when DS's heart rate suddenly dropped and they had 9 residents and nurses rush in and find him with an electrode placed on his head for monitoring. They think he pressed up against the umbilical cord in such a way that his heart rate was affected. Thankfully, it went back up within a minute or so, but it was the scariest experience of my life. My recovery is taking a long time since I pretty much strained my pelvis during the ordeal and am having trouble walking normally, but my dr has seen it before and is confidant I'll be walking a lot better by weeks end.
All I can say is that in the end, the love you feel for your child makes everything worth it, and not everyone has such a complicated labor. Good luck to everyone here with the rest of your pregnancies, it is an amazing experience!!!
