I don't know what to do about a neglected dog...

This is a dog I had called the SCPA about a few months back. I also posted about him - he was tied up outside a restaurant in St. James, all the time, with no shelter. The word on the street was his owners were trying to "get rid of" him. I placed the call to the SPCA and they said they were on it... I would have followed up but then everything with Kenneth went down -- but, in the mean time, I had heard from various people that they hadn't seen the dog where it always was so I assumed that meant the SPCA had taken care of it. Wrong.

I went tonight to see my nephew test for his Jui Jitsu belt and when we came out there was the dog, lying in a puddle, soaking wet, and very cold. He is so friendly - and smelled awful. I feel terrible - I don't know what to do. His is a Newfoundland. I put in a call to the SPCA but it was too late - they were closed. I plan on calling again tomorrow but in the mean time I don't know what to do for this poor thing.

He has NO shelter - is just tied up and laying against the building on the wet pavement. HOW do people treat animals like this???? Please help... does anyone know someone who would be willing to give him a home??

oh god I don't know what to do I am tempted to drive there right now. Is there anyway you can get this dog and keep him somewhere till the morning when the shelter opens. Even in a shed with a nice warm blanket something...

I am not sure if he is kept there all night -- God, I would hope not -- The least they could do is take him home with them at the end of the day but I guess what's the difference between laying in their backyard or laying in the parking lot of the restaurant all night??

I could go there and check -- I would have no problem taking him in for a night -- But where would he go in the morning, what shelter??

Re: I don't know what to do about a neglected dog...

I remember your post....That is so awful, that poor dog. They are BREAKING THE LAW. From the NCSPCA: "If you cannot provide proper shelter for your dog and you keep it outside - You are violating New York State Law!"

If the SPCA doesn't react, call the cops. This dog needs proper care and shelter.

From what I've been told, the owners of the restaurant own the dog. I have heard they have been trying to "get rid of" it for a while. Now, I ASSUME they bring it home at night but if they left it there all night I wouldn't be surprised. They were open this evening when I saw him there so they COULD take him home - not sure.

These shelters will just take any dog?? They won't refuse them? I just want to make sure he won't get put down either --- That is the problem with SPCA. I mean, if I push them to investigate they are going to either bug the owners to get shelter for the dog, then they are not breaking any other laws, so that they can be done with it OR they'll just have them sign the dog over and if it doesn't get adopted they will put it to sleep!

Re: I don't know what to do about a neglected dog...

I emailed two people from two separate Newfie groups on Long Island -- one is a rescue organization.

I don't know what else to do -- if they do not get back to me or cannot help me I will simply go there, get the poor thing, and take him to a shelter that doesn't put dogs that do not get adopted right away to sleep -- I'll just BEG them to take him. Chat Icon

Unless anyone else has suggestions or ideas?? Chat Icon

I just don't think calling the SPCA will do anything. Chat Icon

If the SPCA won't do anything, please take this dog off these idiots hands and bring him to the little shelter or bide-a-wee. If you are worried, call them first, but something has to be done. Take pictures and call the police. 1st priority is to get the animal to a safe place, 2nd is to make sure these slimeballs can never do this to them. I am so angry and sad right now. If I didn't live in an apartment, I would so take him for the night and take him to a shelter in the morning. Please help this pup.Chat Icon

I don't care if you don't want a pet anymore, you don't do that!!!! I hope this dog is being fed!Chat Icon

The little shelter's phone #

631-368-8770

Please try bringing him to a shelter first. If you just call the police he will likely be brought to a kill shelter. He has been through enough...he should not have to go through that...be put to death because his owners are scum.

Re: I don't know what to do about a neglected dog...

I wish i knew what more else to add ... if there was a chance that the dog was still there i would go get him right now. I would be able to place him in my basement at least it is warmer and safer then out side in this weather. the only thing is i have to be at work at 9 am ... so this dog would be here till at least friday. i work till 5:30 tomorrow by the time i got him anywhere they would all be closed

is this the kind of dog it is? External Image

if so the dog might be a great pyrenees. i was looking up the breed newfoundland and they said they are usually black, black and white, brown,or gray. wither way let me know if i can be of some helpChat Icon

Re: I don't know what to do about a neglected dog...

OK - I just left another message. I have two numbers that I left messages with - I am hoping SOMEONE can call me back and help me. If anyone has any other numbers that I can call just FM them or post them and I'll do it when I get home at 1:30 to check the thread again. I am going to check on him tonight after work (my second job) at 11pm -- so help me God, if he is there, laying in that lot at 11pm tonight I am taking him - I don't care if my MIL kills me which she probably will.

I will take him until I find a place for him - be it a non-kill shelter or whatever but I cannot allow him to go to a kill shelter and I cannot allow him to stay in that situation.

Keep ya posted Chat Icon

Go in and ask the owners if they seriously want to get rid of the dog. If they do FM me and I will see what I can do. I would file another complaint with the SPCA and fiollow up...apparently they are repeating the offense and they need to be investigated.

I called Little Shelter - a woman I worked with in the past on charity functions, I had to leave a message for her, but she will be back from lunch soon, I am sure she will check on the messages. I asked her to contact you with some information to help you with the dog.

**UPDATE - my contact called me back, she has spoken with Danielle and Smithtown Animal Shelter who had gotten the dog. I'll let Danielle do details! So happy about the rescue!
