I Don't Know What to Do
So my due date was yesterday. I was 0 cm dilated and 70% effaced. OB said the same thing he's been saying for weeks: 0 cm doesn't mean much; my water could break any second.
My family is really urging me to leave my house and ride out the storm with relatives in NJ. They live 4 miles from a good hospital, and the storm isn't supposed to hit as bad there as it is here in Nassau. My house is not south of Sunrise, but with the winds they're predicting, I'm SO worried about being able to get to the hospital. What if we can't drive because of the storm? Or downed trees? And what if I call an ambulance but they won't come for me because the winds are too high? I can't imagine suffering through a 12 hour (or more?) period of being stuck in my house while I'm ready to give birth any second.
But I don't want to be 2 hours away from my home (well, with normal traffic... probably way longer than that tomorrow), my hospital, and my doctors when I'm 40w 2d - 40w 4d pregnant (Sat - Mon).
I don't know what to do. Advice?
Edited to add: I asked my OB yesterday what to do if I go into labor during the hurricane. He shrugged and said, call 911. Really nonchalantly. He didn't seem to be too concerned.

Re: I Don't Know What to Do
Where do u live and which hospital are you planning to deliver at? How close are you to your hospital?
I hope baby keeps cooking til at least Monday. But if it were me, I wouldn't want to be away from my own home unless evacuation was suggested.

Honestly I would stay put since you arent in a flood area and if it does happen call 911. emergency services will operate just may take longer.

Re: I Don't Know What to Do
Thanks for the input. My family is really pressuring me to go to NJ - they're so worried about me.
I'm just worried about what will happen if I have a situation (as unlikely as it may be) in which i need to get to the hospital quickly.
What do you think about just heading to my hospital and waiting it out in the visitors' lounge or something? I'm sure it'll be a madhouse, but I'm sure a 10-months pregnant lady could at least get a chair.

this is what I thought of... if it starts to get bad out, and you are starting to feel iffy, head to the hospital. Worst thing that happens is you wind up going home when the weather calms down. JMO.

Re: I Don't Know What to Do
Okay... after much deliberation, DH and I decided to head to the hospital tomorrow afternoon and stay until Sunday. You ladies were right; it just doesn't make sense to go so far away.
DH is actually a nurse at the hospital where I'll be delivering, and he can get us recliners, blankets, and pillows in a smaller lounge on his floor. Family members of patients sleep there from time to time. It won't be so comfy, but I figure I'll sleep there better than I'd sleep here in my house.
Thank you for your input. Good luck to everyone riding out this storm, especially my fellow ladies at the end!

For what it is worth, I think you are making the right decision. Storms tend to put women into labor. Best of luck tomorrow!

I know you have a plan already, but I just wanted to say that this is not 100% true. At a certain point if the storm gets to bad they will stop operating. They can not safetly get to people if they are in danger. PLEASE do not assume that they are super human or have super verhicles. I would stay with the plan of being at the hospital, or go to NJ in the end having medical care is the most important thing you need!

I think that's a good plan. I also work at the hospital I am delivering at so I could technically crash in my office, but it would be miserable. If I was past due I would definitely be doing the same thing though. Hope you are able to get some rest there and keep us posted if you can!!!

Re: I Don't Know What to Do
Thanks everyone! Still here, still no signs of labor.
Looks like we'll be able to stay home until after dinnertime at least, and wait for family to come stay at our house - they live in evacuation zones. I don't expect anything to happen in the next 24 hours, but if it does, I'll be in the right place!
