Been following and just saw on the Weather Channel that hundreds of people have died in the Ft. Meyers area. So horrible. I haven't heard anymore but thinking they all stayed thinking they would not get hit.

It's so sad. Unfortunately, many native Floridians (not all) have the mentality that they can just ride it out and they do not evacuate. My in-laws are like this. They are on the water and every time there is a storm on the east coast of florida, they insist on staying even though they are in an evacuation area.

I have a friend in Naples - they put up shutters but I don’t believe they evacuated. Original reports had it hitting the Tampa area but it stayed south.

Thankfully many of the areas hit had newer structures, built after Andrew, but the devastation is going to be huge and widespread.

ETA - the Weather Channel just had a man on who decided he’d weather out the storm in his new sailboat in Fort Meyers… he’s lucky to be alive as his sailboat is a pile of rubble.

OMG I just saw him too. They truly don't think it will be bad and they don't get that they truly can't predict exactly where it will hit. So very sad.

So many won't leave and they truly regret it after.

My mom is like this - she's near Melbourne. Thankfully she's ok but they got clobbered with wind and rain all night.

I just read that people are trapped but rescue can't get to them and 2 million are without power.

Re: Hurricane Ian

So when they tell you to evacuate where do all of these people go? Inland I know, but are there enough shelters? Do hotels inland just get booked up and it becomes a fight for a hotel room? And I can't even imagine the gridlock and traffic that ensues (or maybe I'm thinking of what it would be like trying to evacuate Long Island).

There is traffic. I know in some areas they change the flow of traffic so that you can only drive away from the coastline (they do that in the Myrtle Beach aea as we have been there before a hurricane). They only have to drive an hour or so depending on the storm but it is hard to get hotel rooms so some people have to drive farther. Some people stay with their families.

Many people start evacuating early to avoid the traffic nightmare.

Many go to the hotels in Orlando usually because they are so inland. This time they are getting hit but not as bad as the west. Many go to GA.

I mean, the stupidity is abundant. Who rides out what is predicted to be a Cat 4 on a sailboat? I have family in what I would call a retirement trailer park in Fort Meyers beach. They stayed. Their properties are decimated and they are traumatized. IDK how directives to seek shelter would, in their minds, include a tin can on wheels secured by no foundation. Hello!

I can never figure out why people would live in a trailer in FL in the first place. I get it is cheap but your home will be the first to go and this just proves it.

They are lucky (I guess?) those trailers didn't become boats and floating around in the gulf! The images coming out of Fort Meyers are just disturbing. Those poor people.

I worked in insurance for awhile - closely with adjusters an catastrophe modelers - and it seems that every major hurricane levels a trailer park. It seems (as per the Weather Channel) that these trailers were older models too and not updated to current standards.

And it really irks me when they interview people like the guy who stayed on the boat who make stupid decisions and potentially put others at risk. It was known for long enough now that the storm was going to hit the west coast of FL. There wasnt a lot that was a surprise.

I believe florida has pretty strict rules about emergency services during declared emergencies though. We were there years ago when a major hurricane was heading towards orlando and there was a strict curfew in place and we were told that you could not call an ambulance, police or fire during that time. People with health issues or women who were far along in pregnancy were advised to go to the hospitals for shelter.

Yes they advise them but they can't make them go. They were showing a 90 year old woman who they convinced to leave but they said there were others who would not and the woman talking was almost in tears.

Hurricane Ian

I'm in NC and school is cancelled for tomorrow b/c the (downgraded) tropical storm is headed our way. I don't mind the rain since I'm not in a flood area, but I have a lot of trees around me so hopefully the wind isn't so bad - and no tornados.

Definitely not just Florida. DH works with someone who lives in the Rockaways and he stayed and lost everything as he lived in a basement apartment.

And during the hurricane that hit Wilmington - I had some friends doing disaster recovery there, there were similar types of issues.

I guess when you are told to evacuate and it ends up being nothing major, you stop listening.

Exactly as they have been through so many misses that they don't believe it will come to them. In this instance, they kept pushing that it was going to hit Tampa too so people more southern figured they were ok. 200 people on Sanibel island stayed.

I think because people really believed the track wouldn't be what it ended up being.... initially they had it going up the west coast near tampa then into the panhandle... my sister left for disney last sunday and they decided to chance it instead of rescheduling, since the track wasn't supposed to go near them... well it ended up cutting through FL and disney ended up shutting down, so she was stuck in her hotel for 2 days.

Yes it seems that was a large issue. My friend in Tampa said that they were completely prepared but that their friends that live south of them only had hours to prepare once the storm shifted.

This is a huge reason why people don't evacuate. The predicted storm path is rarely the reality. We have friends down there who evacuated a few years ago to a town further up the coast, and then the hurricane shifted and they were in the direct path. It was very scary for them. But if they had stayed home they would have been fine. Not to mention cost and disruption of evacuating. I'm sure if that happened to me a few times I might stop taking the evac orders so seriously too. Not saying it's right. But I get it.
