Re: Huntington/Elwood/Harborfields SD's -Please Share!

We just bought I house in Huntington but Harborfeilds schools. We love huntington but did not want huntington schools bc of the reputation (I really am only going by what other people have told me and have not personal experiance with huntington schools). So far we are very happy and have learned from our neighbors how wonderful harnorfeilds schools is, they say it's one of the best. My sil lives in Northport and my nephew goes to Elwood and LOVES it. We are also right by the village and it's wonderful (so much fun, lots to do, kid friendly). WE always say if we by another house in the near future we will stay in the area.

I feel torn because when driving around the area, we were more attracted to the houses near the town, like west of the town more inbetween main and Lawrence Hill road...when the neighborhood begins to turn into Cold Spring Harbo Schools (obviously, wouldn't be able to afford 800,00- to a mil) However, we spoke to an older couple and she told us houses 2 blocks from her were Huntington schools- same nice looking houses, but Huntington Schools.

She also mentioned St. Patrick's , but how much would you think a private school would cost ?

I think the Main Street feel is what is really attracting us to that area

thats a great area. Devon (DPerotti) lives over there and it is very nice. I also have 2 other firends who live there and send their childrent to public schools, and have not had a problem. you should FM Devon

ETA: you could buy in a great area with really good schools and it could all change by the time your children go to HS!! think of how amny years that is. Most districts don't have issues with the elemantry levels, its the middle and HS levels that see issues such as drugs gangs etc. (which I am not saying huntington has) so you should buy where you love because you never know what is going to happen between now and then. And also, the reverse could happen. A district could go from ahhh to excellent in just a few years!!

I love the town and the homes there. if you can find something in your price point I think you should go for it. Chat Icon

I am two minutes from mainstreet off of park avenue (the other side). I love the houses over by cold spring harbor too lol, but the section I'm in is really beautiful as well and it's all harborfeild schools. The houses are def a little more affordable (500-600,000 and up). Def look around there too, you never know!

I also think the Huntington SD is sort of getting bad rap. There are no shortage of 1Mil homes being sold there and I know a lot of these folks aren't sending their children to private schools. The Briarfield area is beautiful as is the Flower Hill area and obviously there's Huntington Bay. (Those are just a few areas near me, but there are a lot of other nicer areas!!!)

The areas may be nice, but the primary school is zoned from Huntington Bay/Flower Hill to Tower/Columbia/Lowndes streets) - it's probably the least desirable primary school in Huntington.

Most of the families do send their kids to private school. St Patrick's is a great example of that. They still buy those 1 million houses for the location to the village, water and train.

I have to disagree with Erica on this. I don't believe most families in these areas are sending their children to private school (not to say some don't but I also know families in HF that send their kids to private school and not St. Pats.) I'm behind their school buses way too often and there's no shortage of kids getting off and on and they're most definitely not in uniform. (I'm pretty certain St. Pats requires a uniform.)

We almost purchased a home on Wyona Ct. (SD 3).

Does CSH even have any homes at the 800k mark? Usually if there's anything under 1mil, it's on Main St. or a tiny home/plot that needs work or to be leveled.

Aw Thanks! We still have some work to do but I really do love it. We moved in last year, found out I was pregnant and have had no time to decorate the house, but now that my baby boy is here we are going to start little by little. Let me know if you ever move into the area or if ya have any other questions!

here's the link to the St. Patricks Parish School just so you have it. St. Pats is a great parish.

I like the parish (we were married there as well as having my children christened there), but I know they have turned people away because of where they live. (Not in regards to education, but as parishioners.) When the neighbors behind us first moved in, they went to register at the rectory and were told they couldn't go there based on their address and that they should be going to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs. That was the first time I had ever heard of a church turning someone away based on where they live. (Not that it's a big deal since most of the community/neighbors attend OLQM anyway.)

I thought that you were assigned a parish based on your address? (Someone who moved in near my parents asked me where the church was since that was where they were assigned) The only time I heard of people changing was when there was a mass migration out of St Francis when a priest made an insensitive comment about 9-11 and a lot of people went to St Phillips in Northport.

That's where I am. I'm right off Lawrence Hill. I love our area, I love that I can walk into town. Is it harborfields SD, no...but Huntington is NOT a bad SD at all, it has a bad reputation but my parents belong to a yacht club in Huntington and I've asked a ton of people about the SD and all of them have sent there kids there or went to school there themselves.

If you are looking around the lawrence hill area, I would def. check out st. pats if you are more comfortable sending your kids there, it's down the road.
