Huntington/Elwood/Harborfields SD's -Please Share!
I currently live in Nassau and don't know too much about these school districts and towns
Some houses are in Huntington w/ Huntington schools...some with Elwood and some Harborfields...
what would be the best combo here- don't really know much but would like any input from people who live near this area
TIA!

Well Harborfields and Elwood were GREAT SD's when I was in school--I went to HS at Whitman. Huntington would probably be the least desirable of the 3 but they're all good. I'm also not sure how the SD's have changed over the years!

Re: Huntington/Elwood/Harborfields SD's -Please Share!
We bought in Elwood in August 08. We have only heard good things about the SD. (I too grew up in Nassau) so i knew nothing about things out here. i am a public school teacher and i feel good about buying in Elwood and will send DC when it's time. harborfields is a good district too, but different. much larger, elwood only has three schools (one k-2, one 3-5 and a combined middle and HS). Also, Elwood only graduates about 225 kids a year.
If $$$$ is an issue, property taxes are much lower in Elwood. My doctor who lives in Harborfields told me he wishes he bought in Elwood because he feels their special ed. program is better. Everyone has different things they want in a district, but all of them are good districts.

agreed that Elwood and Harborfields are probably the best out of the 3. Huntington is fine but not as desirable. I too graduated from Whitman which is in the South Huntington district. We bought in South Huntington because of the great experience I had there and I will definitely send my child to South Huntington schools when the time comes.

I grew up in ENPT but went to Northport schools. ITA with what everyone else said here. Harborfields and Elwood are better than Huntington, but Huntington is still good. If I had to chose, and taxes were not an issue, I would chose Harborfields .

Re: Huntington/Elwood/Harborfields SD's -Please Share!
we are selling in Harborfields and will most likely buy in harborfields.
Harborfields and elwood are very similar, but Elwood is smaller (which has pros and cons) - there is ALWAYS (for 20+ years) talk about combining the two districts.
I personally wouldn't buy in Huntington. I can FM you the reasons if you would like.

i would pick
centerport huntington greenlawn
in that order, but all are nice. some of centerport is on the water which is really nice! there is a small part of greenlawn south of pulaski around broadway and that park are not that great but as soon as you go 1 block west of broadway the southside is good again

We live in Huntington in the HF SD. (Been here since 2001.)
Personally, I prefer the Greenlawn & Huntington homes near the middle school and north of Pulaski & east of Broadway/Centerport Rd. The properties tend to be 1 or more acres and flat. Lots of remodels going on in the area too helping the resale of other homes.
Centerport is pretty, but very inconsistent with its property sizes & homes. And the terrain can be rough in the winter (no shortage of hills and narrow roadways.) Same could be said of the Huntington Beach area. Many of the properties have unusable land because of the hills. Many of the people in my neighborhood relocated to where we live from Centerport (for the neighborhood and bigger plots of land.)
Centerport doesn't really have a town center per se. Greenlawn offers a bit more in that sense. But it is a tight community. You really get to know everyone in the area.
In Huntington, tthere are some beautiful homes in and around Longacre Drive, my only gripe with that area (which is just a personal preference) is that it's not more wooded, but it's still a beautiful area none the less.
I also think the Huntington SD is sort of getting bad rap. There are no shortage of 1Mil homes being sold there and I know a lot of these folks aren't sending their children to private schools. The Briarfield area is beautiful as is the Flower Hill area and obviously there's Huntington Bay. (Those are just a few areas near me, but there are a lot of other nicer areas!!!)
Huntington and Harborfields have rather nice public libraries. Elwood's is on the small side.
If you have any questions, please feel free to FM.
ETA: I can't really think of any areas "bad" areas in Centerport. I don't want you to think I don't like Centerport. I love all three towns and many other areas that I didn't list!

By the baseball fields? If that's what you're referring to, that area isn't bad or sketchy.
Or are you referring to the neighborhoods further south on Broadway, which actually border homes that go to Elwood?

south of broadway and not elwood. I actually thought it was part of huntington station but its not. I do think its not the best area to live in if you have a choice.

Re: Huntington/Elwood/Harborfields SD's -Please Share!
I grew up in Northport and Elwood is a very small district (thats not good or bad) Hintington pulls students from a broad range....by the water expensive homes and then more into Hunt Station not so nice....so I think its diverse. Never had a BAD reputation when I was growing up but wasnt good either...just kinda there. Haborfields was also a small district (to me coming from NPT) but also never heard anything bad about it.
There are some bad areas....I agree further South down Boradway in Greenlawn but its a small area. Centerport is nice and know lots of people who live there but they all live on hills and have a tuff time in the winter.
I think any of the districts are safe so I would more weigh my decision on the house since they all have decent reps.

Re: Huntington/Elwood/Harborfields SD's -Please Share!
I grew up in Centerport and went to HF all the way through (K-12). It was a great district then and from what I hear, still is. Its definitely grown since I left though. I graduated with 136 kids in my class in the mid 90's. My siblings who were 3 and 5 yrs behind me, had 200+ in their classes.
Generally speaking in that district, the more "desirable" areas are north of Pulaski, and really north of the railroad, but that's just a townie view point; there are nice areas south too. There are a bunch of homes that are considered Huntington that are sandwiched in between Oldfield Rd, Co Rd 9 and Dunlop Rd that are nice. Another spot is hidden off of Cherry Lane and Salem Ridge Road. The houses and plots back there are huge. Another spot to look at is south of Pulaski off of Butterfield Dr. That's Greenlawn. Newer homes than you'll find elsewhere (not new build but newer).
As for Centerport proper, most of Centerport is located north of 25A (there is part of Cport that is just south of 25A). As a PP stated, it is hilly, and can be tough to navigate in icy weather, but they are good about plowing and treating them in bad weather. The bonus to living there is that you are closer to the beaches, and there are lots of families up there so if you have kids, or for when you have them, your kids won't lack playmates.
The other benefit to Centerport is that you are that much closer to Huntington and Northport villages.
hth and good luck!

The area around the ball fields at Pulaski and Broadway is not bad at all and has never been considered bad. The area of Greenlawn that has gotten a bad rap is south of that.
If I had to pick between Harborfields, Huntington and Elwood, I would pick Harborfields even though I went there and I s&ck.

We just bought a house right by Little Shelter. It is a Huntington zip code but Elwood school districts. If you are familiar with Broadway find where Rainbow Chimes day care is and do not look over there. I grew up in Centerport and Harborfieilds was great.
The taxes that we will be paying are high. If you are looking for lower taxes look at houses in Northport school district (we looked could not find a house we liked).

I have to agree with this...around the balpark is pretty nice and a lot of people like to live near the village and walk to the train.
the area that isn't so great (south of Little Plains) is Huntington zip code. Actually, I think south of Aster is Huntington (with the exception of Butterfield)

The areas may be nice, but the primary school is zoned from Huntington Bay/Flower Hill to Tower/Columbia/Lowndes streets) - it's probably the least desirable primary school in Huntington.
Most of the families do send their kids to private school. St Patrick's is a great example of that. They still buy those 1 million houses for the location to the village, water and train.
