Re: HSG- What should I expect?

I bumped an old post by maybeamommy that should help. I just had one a few weeks ago and found this when I did a search. It was very helpful. Mine was not bad at all. I took an advil an hour before. The only part of the procedure I found a little painful was when they injected the dye. It was like bad period cramps but went away after 30 seconds or so. Hope yours goes well- try not to be too nervous! Chat Icon

Re: HSG- What should I expect?

I'm going for one soon also. Where are you having yours done? I called a couple of places but was told they don't do it.

As for what to expect, I've heard it feels like you have bad AF cramps, but it doesn't last long. The test itself is not very long at all. Bring a pad with you because from what the ladies on here have told me, the dye can leak out a little and you might bleed a little after. They give you one, but it's huge.

Good luck!

You are not sounding ignorant! I didn't know what one was until I had to have one. It's a hysterosalpingogram (sp?), an x-ray that checks out the inside of your uterus and your tubes to check for polyups or blocked tubes. In many cases, if there is a bit of blockage it gets cleared with the dye that they inject.

Re: HSG- What should I expect?

When I went for mine it was not bad at all. I think the anticipation leading up to it was worse than the actual procedure. It was quick and relatively painless. Like a previous poster stated it experienced some cramping when the initially inserted the dye but it was not bad after that. I also did not have any blockages so that may be why it didn't hurt that bad. A few of my friends that had blockages did experience some pain. The same month I had the hsg is the month I conceoved DS. I hope you have the same experience. Good luck!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: HSG- What should I expect?

I had an HSG a couple of months ago. It was definitely very uncomfortable - literally felt like someone pressed an "on button" for bad menstrual cramps - but thankfully, it was over quickly and really not a big deal at all.
One thing I wish I knew was to bring my own pad for afterwards, as I wound up having to wear the one the hospital provided that was so uncomfortably thick.
Good luck!! Chat Icon
