I'd be pissed. There's no reason for a baby to try coffee.

Agreed. Had an issue w someone giving our DS soda. I wasn't there & might not have said anything if I was but I wasn't thrilled when I heard about it; I just don't think there's a reason, especially when I don't typically drink soda & think it's unhealthy in general, especially for a toddler.

I wouldn't give my kids soda or coffee for a long, long time so idk why anyone would assume they should, even just to "taste" it. What's the point?

Re: How would you react?

It wouldn't bother me- I am of the mindset that a sip of anything, and in this case, a drop of anything, can't harm you - unless of course that anything is like rat poison or something.

But very little bothers me when it comes to stuff like this... I am so laid back I often wonder if I am alive! Chat Icon

How would you react?

It's not the worst thing ever - but it's more that I don't see a need.

I hate the finger in the mouth though. Icky. It's flu season isn't it?

I can't imagine getting worked up over this. I'm surprised how many people responded that they would be so angry.

I wouldn't be pissed, but I would not want my 18 month old trying coffee at all and would have said something

I wouldn't be bothered by a single taste of it. If they were feeding my child cups of coffee I'd be annoyed.

Me too

How would you react?

i'd be annoyed - about both the finger and coffee. I'm over germs at this point but there's no reason for someone else to put their finger in my DS mouth! And i'm not a big coffee drinker, there's just no reason to give them a taste so why bother?

Re: How would you react?

I wouldn't be too happy, but more about how it happened. If LO was just minding their own business and the grandparent comes over with coffee on their finger I'd think it was weird and say something.
If LO was on a grandparent's lap or close by and really interested in the coffee and kept grabbing at it then I wouldn't be as bothered. I'd say something like... ok, they tried it so no more.

How would you react?

I wouldn't be pissed, but I would wonder what the point of it was. I would get pissed if she wound up liking it and every time I sat down to have coffee she wanted a taste.

considering that I already did that with my son when he was 6 months, i don't think i would care. If there were artificial sweeteners in it however, I would freak out on them. We are a non artificial sweetener family now and inlaws live on that crap.

It wouldn't really bother me. DH and I drink coffee in front of DD all the time, and every few weeks she begs and whines that she wants to taste it, so we'll let her have a sip. She says, "coffee yucky!" and that's that. Until 3 weeks later when she's forgotten and begs for a taste again. Chat Icon It doesn't do her any harm.

For me it was the coffee. And that it was 30 min before bedtime. But I just said "he doesn't need to try coffee" and it was over. But I wondered afterward if I was being weird bc I don't understand why anyone would offer a toddler coffee

I would have said the same thing as you.

Same here.

And to add That's just ridiculous to me.
I am assuming this was your mil?
She had some nerve.
Good you open your mouth to her.
I'd also like to say that in my opinion, there is absolutely no reason to give a baby a taste of coffe. There is no point.

One time, and really HOW much could have possibly been on a finger? I would have done nothing, its not going to hurt anyone.

Re: How would you react?

Wouldn't bother me. But then again, I let DD take a sip of my Starbucks Frapp when I get it. How much coffee can be on a fingertip?

Re: How would you react?

I wouldn't think twice..really, a taste of coffee is nothing!!

I also let my kids sip my iced coffee once in a while, they love it. No big deal to me. But my family also is pretty laid back about that stuff. My mom, sisters etc..have let the kids try all diff things and I don't think twice.

Re: How would you react?

My mom gave my DS her almost completely empty coffee cup once when he was like 10 months old or so. Of course he was licking it and putting it in his mouth. I was annoyed and questioned her, then afterwards realized it was not a big deal at all for him to just taste the flavor a little.

Very annoyed. I don't believe it is a grandparents place to let a child "taste" things. Only a mom can make that decision.

I totally agree! I would've been furious. You are much more polite than I would have been.

I would react this way as well.

Not really clear whats so funny about giving a child adult like things that they shouldnt have. I know a lot of people think its cute to do this I dont.

How would you react?

Unless they did it after I told them not to, no I wouldn't freak out about it. A cup of coffee? Probably. A tiny little drop, no.

I guess one little taste of coffee wouldn't hurt, but really what's the point of seeing if a baby likes coffee? It's not like they can have more if they do like it.

I agree
