How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

We have a budget of $25 for everyone in our family.

and I mean EVERYONE. parents, sisters, cousins....everyone gets a gift. but no one gets anything extravagant.

we only spend more on each other...and I guess in the future our children.

it's basically b/c we have a large family...but we don't believe in NOT gifting someone to the benefit of someone else.

and, Christmas IMO isn't for getting someone their dream gift...that is what birthday's are for.

we go a bit over on some, under on others...and come out with $25 as our average.

you'd be surprised what you can get people on that budget...I am proud of every gift we've picked up this year and I can't wait to hand them out that Christmas. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: we have a list of about 25-30 gifts to buy (including my married cousins that we buy couple gifts for)

Re: How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

I wish I could hold DH to a budget, he goes waaaaaaaaaay overboard for the kiddies and spoils them rotten. But we have so many little ones in our family (10 nephews and a niece), plus my two younger step-sisters (still teens), that we only do gifts for them.

For the parents, we usually do something small like new pictures of the grandkids in nice frames. Since my IL's have 7 grandkids at the moment (and 2 more on the way), we do a nice collage of pics of the kids through the year to give to them.

ETA: I screwed up the poll Chat Icon

Also for the siblings, we do something inexpensive as well.

It averages out to $50 per person. We spend more on IL's and less on my nieces.

ETA: This doesn't include anyone inside our house.

Besides buying for each other and DS, we only exchange with DH's parents, sister and her family. We have a limit of $75 per person for extended family and no limit for each other.

Mom, Dad, brother - $75/each
Kids under 10 - $20
Kids over 10 - $40

We have 1 secret santa with Dh's family (HUGE family) - $150/couple <which actually saves us quite a bit since his family is 15+ people>

Another secret santa with my extended family - $50/individual

$20 for each adult COUPLE
$50 for each child

For a lot of the adults I will go under if I find something cute. And for the children I usually go over. It all evens out! DH and I have no limit.

For example I found this bag that DH's niece will love for $100 - but I KNOW it will be something special that she is going to freak out about so I got it, even though I absolutely HATE the bag. LOL

Re: How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

Kids - about $175 each on toys
My parents and ILs - $50-75
My brothers - $50
DH's Siblings - $25
DH's niece - $40-50

DH and I probably won't exchange gifts bc we brought a Flat screen and GPS recently.

Re: How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

DH and I don't really have a budget for each other, but we don't go nuts - I don't think I typically spend more than $100 on him. I buy a bunch of small things that I know he will like as I see them unless he tells me there is something in particular that he wants. I sort of did the same thing this year with DS.

Everyone else in the family gets something in the range of $25-35, so I guess an average of $30.

I spend about $10-15 on a few people at work I have to buy for. I would rather not exchange there at all, but it becomes this awkward "they got me something, and I feel badly if I don't reciprocate" kind of situations.

For the parents $50-$60 each

For the nieces and nephew $50-$60 each and for DH's godson $100

For our kids around $200 each

For DH's siblings & their spouses we do a Kris Kringle and the limit is $100

For my siblings we also do a Kris Kringle and that one is $50

For DH and myself we try and stay under $400 each.

I have to say so far I did really well with my budget and only went over a few bucks here and their. Let's see how it finishes up though Chat Icon

Re: How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

We used to spend alot more

about $200 on each of our parents/sis/SIL
$150 or so on our nephews and around $50 or so on cousins/aunts/uncles etc and no limit on each other.

This year we have cut waaaaaaaaaaay back. I'm learning that spending more dosn't necessarily mean that the gift is more special.

Re: How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

There are no kids in the immediate family to buy for yet (no nieces or nephews).

We aim to keep it at or around $75 - $100 per person

Our gift to eachother this year will be Chat Icon, probably a new flatscreen TV and some other stuff for our apartment that we need.

Re: How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

It depends. We thankfully only do a Grab Bag with both sides of the family so no more buying for one person. Then we try to spend the same amount on each parent and then $50 on each sibling. We have no limit for each other.

Re: How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

I actually set a budget this year and pretty much stuck to it!!!

We had 16 kids gifts to buy, then the adults we buy for are our parents and each other.

- Up to $100 for nieces and nephews (I used to go WAY over this!)

- $30-50 for all other kids

- Up to $100 for each of the parents (except for my mom which we spend more on)

- No set limit for each other's gifts (sometimes DH does a really nice combo gift since my bday is on Christmas day). Also, his bday is Jan. 2nd so he gets another gift then.

Re: How much do you spend per person on Holiday gifts

We dont't have too many to buy for -
4 parents, 3 siblings, 1 sibling's BF - We spend about $100 pp.

We buy for about 6 - 8 kids and spend around $20 per kid

A few little things here and there - again, around $20 pp -

On each other - DH yells at me and puts me on a budget for HIS gift every year - and every year he buys me somethng totally extravegant .........

Depends. We tend to spend at least $50 per child, same for siblings, and more for each parent, and each other (DH and I get each other a big gift). And anyone that knows me and DH knows that we both have huge families. It's a blessing and a curse at the same time Chat Icon Chat Icon
