How much did you put down

So DH and I were trying to plan when we are going to buy something - our first move would probably be into a co-op or a condo, then eventually a house. I just don't know how people do it. How much did you all put down. We have a little nest egg but I don't think it is 20% of anything that these places are going for Chat Icon

Re: How much did you put down

We bought a coop and had to put down 20%. I've heard of coops who only want 10% down, but I don't know where they are. Maybe a real estate agent would know better.

Re: How much did you put down

3%

We kept some in the bank for furniture, paint, curtains, etc.

I don't know many people who put down 20% or more in the past few years.

WE bought in 2000, when the market wasn't as bad, and we put down about 33% on our home.

Re: How much did you put down

Most people don't put down 20% nowadays. You can take out what's called an 80-15-5, where you put down 5%, you get a traditional mortgage for 80%, and you take a home equity for 15%. The advantage of that is that you don't have to pay PMI (personal mortgage insurance), which you normally have to pay if you put down less than 20%. We did this on our house. They also have 80-10-10s and other variations. My DH works with mortgages so feel free to FM with any other questions.

Re: How much did you put down

We put down 20% and because of that we got the house. There were other people in the running but we had the most to put down and we had benn pre approved already for mortgage.

I would definately try to get this, in the area where I live, there are so many people going for the same houses so the best bet is to have that 20%, JMO.

We had to put down 20% on our co-op. All of my friends who own co-ops had the same requirement.
