How many of you were still renting when you got pregnant/had your first child?

the talk of babies has been coming up alot lately and we'd both consider it a blessing to have a baby at any time. but we'd ideally like to have the house THEN the baby. but the urge to have a baby has been becoming overwhelming. so i wanted to see if its "okay" by people's standards to have the baby first then the house.

opinions?

Re: How many of you were still renting when you got pregnant/had your first child?

im expecting #2 and live in a 2 bedroom apt....dont get me wrong, i would LOVE to be in a house right now, but we really dont pay rent which in turn allows me to take off a year from work to raise my babies (first one i did, and this year i will take off too im sure).....we are also blessed with having a really big 2 bedroom....so i say go for it!

DH and i always say- do we wish we had a house first? and our answer is always no, just based on the fact that we would NEVER be able to afford living on one salary for a year in order for me to take off from work..... Chat Icon

We rent. And honestly, I am not really in a rush to buy a house at all.

we rent and my daughter is 2.5 years old. we probably will be moving in with my FIL soon since buying a house is not really in the question for us right now....but i don't regret renting at all.

Re: How many of you were still renting when you got pregnant/had your first child?

My opinion is that whether you rent, own, live in a mansion, in a cardboard box, drive a porsche or a broken down piece of crap, people will STILL find something negative to say and you will STILL find something that makes it "not the right time".
That being said, don't worry about anyone else's opinion but yours and your husband's.
We were living in a one bedroom apartment when I got pregnant. We had no extra money to get a two bedroom apartment because then we wouldn't be able to save for a house. We lived there for the first year of my daughter's life and she shared our bedroom. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the set-up and many, many, many people do it. You do what you have to, and if you want a house, eventually, then nothing will stop you from getting that, and if you feel ready for a baby, then renting should not stop you from having one.

We rent a two-bedroom house but just bought a house. DD will be 9 months when we move in. We have really outgrown it here.

BUT - you don't live on LI! I'm sure a house in NC isn't cheap, but nothing like living on LI....

We decided to have the baby first. WHile pregnant we went house hunting. (Never really expected it, but we were really having so many problems in the aprtment we were living in.) We wanted to see what was out there. We fell in love with one place and bought it. We waited too long though. We moved in one night and the baby came the next day. Do not recommend house hunting past the first trimester because this could happen.

I had 2 babies before we bought a house. Robbie was 4 and Noah was 2 before we moved into a home. It was perfectly fine for us!

we still rent.
I honestly wouldn't hold off having a DC because of a house.
we have a 2 bedroom apartment and we do just fine. Then again- I was raised in a rental- as long as there is love in the family- that is the most important thing.

We were renting, we still rent and with what we have been seeing in our price range, we will happily rent for a while longer.

We were ready for a baby and we knew we wouldn't be in our own home for quite some time. It was a no brainer for us.

We were sort of renting when DS came along. We are renting a 2 bedroom apartment now and are currently TTC.

We will always be renting. Whether it be a bigger 3 bedroom apt or a whole house.

Re: How many of you were still renting when you got pregnant/had your first child?

We still rent. We can afford to buy and so many people question why we haven't yet. We came close last year, but the deal fell through. I am not in a hurry, because like a PP, I am taking a long unpaid maternity leave and don't know if I could afford to do that if we were paying a mortgage right now.

When someone is paying my bills, they can worry about how and where I live. Until that happens, they should MTOB.

We rent and we only have a 1 br apartment. There is a perfect little nook for dd's crib. I look at it as we are saving $$ for a big down payment on a house. I couldn't care less about what people think of our situation. It works for us and allows me to be home with her until September.

We are renting , 3br apt, didn't really plan to get prego , wanted to buy a house first, but it happened . We don't know if we are going to have more children yet(we would love to , but my docs have to give me a OK first) but if we do, we 'd love to buy a house first. We are looking ,so time will tell.

Re: How many of you were still renting when you got pregnant/had your first child?

If you are in a good marriage and want to have children, then have them. I don't think renting is a negative. Not having healthcare might be, maybe if someone had a lot of debt, zero savings and an instable job then maybe that couple should wait a bit. A lot of folks rent and have healthy financial bottom lines. If we all waited for the perfect, ideal situation (renting, money, perfect job, done with school, etc.) not many of us would be parents right now.

We were renting when I got pregnant. We found out we were having twins on a Wednesday, and closed on our house the following Wednesday, thankfully. There is no way we could have stayed in the apartment we were in with twins. But for us, we agreed we would have the house first then kids.
