when we were looking for homes we set the max rate for taxes would have to be under $10k...we couldnt justify spending more than that...also taxes always increase...I can def see us moving out of NYC or at least LI when we retire because the taxes would kill us

My taxes are 1k a month. Big burden , but it is such a great area . Guess you get what you pay for,too bad is so much  we already realize we may not be able to retire and stay in this house

We live in what I consider to be a good/great town with a fantastic school district. The taxes can get a little crazy but with Star, Veterans discount & we greeted them as well it's actually a fair amount. My friends pay $75k year  now that's INSANE!!!!

We passed on a lot of houses/areas because of the taxes. We were also buying at the peak of the market in 2005 so being that the mortgage itself was so insane we HAD to be very aware of the taxes for every house we looked at. The taxes priced us out a few times.
We really liked Miller Place but the taxes were between $12-14K and with the home prices we were looking at it was too much when added together. We also loved Stony Brook, which is where we bought our house, and the home prices were similar to Miller Place only the taxes when we bought the house were about $7800/yr. I think now we're at around $8700'ish/yr.
Getting the home with the lower taxes really made a difference in our overall monthly payments so it's really a huge consideration when home shopping for sure.

You do not need to pay a lot in taxes to get in a good neighborhood / school district. I bought in holbrook and my taxes are less than $7K. Sachem ranks very well compared to some pricier areas and I felt it was a better bang for the buck. I believe the OP is in nassau. I would research other areas that are less expensive. You can still buy in great areas and still be in great school districts!

True, there are a lot of good school districts out there, but we are pretty limited in our search:
1. close to the city, as the wife works LONG hours. (in the office from 8am to 8pm)
2. close to Flushing, as my parents are there and they can help in the future when we have kids
3. Good school district
With that, it eliminates a lot of places on Long Island.
In the past we've had recommendations (from here) for:
West Isilp, Babylon, Rockville centre, Merrick, Garden City
Some might be close to the city, but not close to Flushing, etc...
Even if the LIRR ride isnt that long to the city, you have to factor in commute time to the LIRR station and then commute time once you are in the city.
With these factors in mind, we decided to focus on Great Neck, Manhasset, Herricks, New Hyde Park area.
Which means the taxes are high (especially if we focus on the Great Neck or Herricks school district)

Please don't count on this! We almost spent a TON of money on a home in bayside so inlaws can help. Suddenly they are not able to help (they have elderly parents and lots of aches and pains etc) I thank god we did buy a house there.

We bought a house with taxes about 8K. Its a nice house on a decent size property and a middle of the road district. I am confident my kid will get a great education in the district. It doesn't need to be a top district to do well and seeing that school taxes are a large chunk we felt we made the right choice.

We started in Queens (Bayside and Douglaston to be exact) but the houses were in the 700+ range. Which was ALOT!!
But now that we've seen the LI real estate taxes...we are rethinking Bayside/Douglaston
