How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
Having a discussion on another board and they all claim that if you can take it, why not? I was brought up that you did not take assistance unless it was the last resort.
Wondering what others think of this?

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
My parents used WIC for a little while when I was very young...we needed it and it killed my parents to use it
However, when you have kids to feed, your pride gets put aside.
I dont like when people take advantage of the system though.

What I don't understand is when you see people using foodstamps or WIC and they have a $200 cell phone and a COach bag...that just doesn't add up to me.
I feel that there are people who use it to get back on their feet and then there are people who use it forever and abuse the system.

ITA with you. I was explaining how a couple we know used wic and welfare and they had a $500/month car payment. Because he worked off the books, she got the assistance when they really did not need it.

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
i used Wic when Alia was born, my husband was the only one working and we were struggling as it was. It was very helpful and i'm not ashamed to admit that. I believe that if you need help and you qualify for it, why not?
What i don't agree with is when people that are capable to find a job and work hard, abuse the system and they live off welfare.

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
As an assistance program for the needy, I think it is a positive program. I also think it can be abused and the people who abuse it should rot. I also think that the program could be improved greatly. I also have very strong feelings about Social Security and Disability.
I have learned about these programs in greater detail since my mom was declared permanently disabled because of crippling heart disease. She is 56 years old and won't live to be 60 years old unless she has a heart transplant. In the meantime, she can't work, can't drive, and is dependent on government programs. The government programs pay her $600 a month. She has worked since she was 15 years old but disability only pays her $600 a month. I would like to know how anyone is expected to live like that.

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
i have an aunt who has been on wic and welfare for 30 YEARS!! she popped out 8 kids with 7 fathers (she had twins once) weight about 400 lbs. now and hasn't worked in more than 3 decades......i look at her and i want to fuking VOMIT because she disgusts me so much. she just doesn't think she needs to work--why should she? that is what the govt is for.
that being said--my sister needed wic and welfare for about 2 years or so when she was a single mom--living in a 1 bdrm basement apt. in bklyn with her daugther and other sister. she made min. wage as a cashier and received zero support from the father. so she had to get help. today, she has been in the military for the past 7 years---has spent time living in Bahrain, Belgium, and the Czech Republic....has no bills but her mortgage payment and utilities--a college fund set up for her daughter works in the legal dept. at her base, and is a Chief Petty Officer with her own asst.
i think wic and welfare can help those in need but it can also be something that ppl just take for granted. it stinks that ppl have to ruin it for others like that.

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
I have had clients who have been on WIC and welfare. What is really, really sad is when I have a client who has no money and not enough food and they don't get assistance because they are against it. In that case, you better believe I am going to talk them into taking what is available. Some of them are my clients b/c they have disability claims pending but they only want benefits for what they paid into FICA. Some will qualify for other benefits while disability is pending.

Exactly.
I dont think anyone would say that they feel negatively about wic/welfare in general. The problem is with the crappy people that abuse the system.
Im curious what your other board considers the qualifications are that say that you "can take it", and if that means hiding money, working off the books, and deliberately changing your lifestyle to be able to qualify for it- well then, they're just fooling themselves into having a clear conscience.

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
I think it is a great program when used correctly. There are families that fall on hard times that truly need the assistance and I dont mind my tax dollars going to those people. However...I do have a problem with people who abuse it. IMO, we need stricter guidelines to make it harder for people to take advantage.

I wonder the same thing. My mom has the same struggles and it infuriates me how poorly the government treats people who always worked hard and did the right thing compared to those who don't even try.

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
I raised a child alone for 14 years without one cent of child support. There was a time when my son was about 7 that I needed to dump a fortune into my car to keep it running & my rent went up. I went to social services with my tail between my legs in what was probably the lowest moment of my life to ask for emergancy food stamps just for few weeks because I only got paid once a month and I had no money at all. I sat there all day feeling like a turd & when it was finally my turn they told me NO because I made 75 cents more a week BEFORE TAXES than the cut off. I told the lady I had no food & she told me too bad. If I were a jackoff loser that sat home & watched jerry springer I would have qualified, but as a worker I didn't. Its an effed up system that needs to be abolished & reinvented so only people that TRY to do something for themselves can get services.

That must have been so difficult for you.
And I totally hear you about it being reinvented. In college, my friend's mom was off the books and she was getting Ds and Fs with so many checks from the state she was going to the mall with them. I on the other hand had to work and help pay for my way through college getting a wopping $137 a semester in aid earning As. I know I am talking about something different but same premise and the system is not always made available to everyone who truly needs but rather those who know how to work the system.
If you need it- great. If you don't- shame on you. And then please, if you really can't raise your kids, do them a favor and stop having more.
Vent over.

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
Someone I know refuses to get a job, because if she did "she would lose her aid" Her husband works off the books, and she does nothing. The gov't pays for her food as well as her babies formula.. The gov't makes it so its more convient for her to stay home than it is for her to go to work. She makes more money sitting at home on her @ss- then she would if she went out and got a job lke the rest of us...
I have met others who feel they are owed everything. I have heard some say things like "They" (the gov't) need to pay for me to get my car on the road. "If "they" want me to get a job, then "they" need to pay for my daycare.
How about NO- "They" dont need to do anything- YOU should get off your lazy Arse and do it yourself. No one paid to put my car on the road...
Its really sad- because there are so many others who "just" miss the cut off (Like the story Kellyfg told) and cant get the tinest bit of help even though they really need it...

Working in daycare I cant tell you how many families I have met on subsidy programs- Some with 5 or more kids in daycare all at once
Do you know what an avg daycare bill for 5 children looks like???? 5k/month
Id love to have 5 kids too- BUT I dont because I cant afford to pay to put them all in daycare

Re: How do you feel about Wic and Welfare?
I think long term use of these programs is basically abuse, however if you pay your taxes and you work for a living, if you need these benefits, they should be available to you, no problems.
I get a child care allowance from the government for my child, it is about $150 a month, I will get that much for each child I have, and I will continue to get it until the child is 16. This is a benefit that everyone is entitled to, and as far as I know, everyone takes advantage of. If we were a low income family, this money would be invaluable for things like milk, food, clothes and diapers.

I dont see anything wrong with it if you truly need it. I hate the abuse the system get though.
When I worked in a supermarket, I remember one lady getting WIC items or paying with food stamps and then she walked out to her red covertible PORSCHE!
I took my $4.75 and hour and went home in my 1986 Pontiac.
