Re: How do you feel about this practice?

This is such a great question bc it leads us to whether or not thier religion/culture/morals have shaped them to believe this is the 'right' thing to do. So to answer your question, I think in their hearts they do not want to do it, but feel they must or they will be unaccepted and disgrace their family. from the article
"If my mother ever found out about this, she would have a mental breakdown," Amel said. "I don't want to have this surgery, but I don't have any choice."

Re: How do you feel about this practice?
I don't agree with this at all. It is lying, pure and simple. If you have had sex, you are not a virgin. Resewing a piece of flesh in place doesn't make you virginal. It is so barbaric.

How is this any different than woman in america who LIE about their "lists" to their boyfriend/FH or DH? LOTS of women leave a number or two off...
The women who lie aren't paying thousands of dollars and having surgery on their va-jay-jay for no reason...
Then by your rationale elective plastic surgery is wrong? Women here are paying thousands of dollars for new boobs, or belly, or butts or whatever.

I don't see a problem with it. It's based on their morals (or change of) and who am I to judge?
At least it's not for "aestetic" reasons like those that have their vageen (Jenna Jameson) reconstructed b/c they've worn it out so much!
So funny and a little of topic, but one of my husband's clients does Vagina reconstruction...I think it's a Vaginoplasty?? The call him Dr. Vagina...ok...carry on...

I see no difference in what Jameson did verus these women. I do. what jenna did was a personal preference. these women are doing it because it is expected that they are virgins when they get married, or they could be "honor killed" by a family member! SICK SICK SICK!!!!!!
There are MANY cultures where a woman is expected to be a virgin before she is married. She is expected to lose her virginity to her husband...not her boyfriend. if these women weren't so afraid of "disgracing their families" or WORSE (being honor killed), do you really think they would do it?
I think they are doing this for themselves and also for their families. I think when someone is in a situation like this, it's easier to understand than one who is not.
I think we're looking at "honor" in a different light. I look at honoring your family in that they raised us to do the right thing based on morals and values. I don't see why that's such a "bad" thing, but that's because I agree with what my family has instilled in me.
We all come from different cultures and religions. I was raised in a Middle-Eastern Catholic home. I was raised to respect myself and my family and taught that sex was saved for marriage. Did I do that - no? Do I feel like I disrespected myself or my family - yes, to a certain extent. If I could go back in time and do it again, then I would make better decisions, based on my morals and beliefs.
I also feel this article goes back and forth....parts of it give a perception of "supporting" these women, and then parts show "condemning" the women for what they're doing, and putting a really harsh outlook on their religions and cultures. They made it a point to state that the women were muslims, but living like Parisians...One has nothing to do with the other IMHO. Islam is their religion, and French is their decent (or I think it was Algerian in the article.)

I feel bad for them too, they're doing it out of fear.. I think comparing women who chose to get a boobjob or a tummy tuck to those who get revirginized is a stretch... SOME may be getting a face lift to feel accepted, but I would think that the percentage of those women wouldn't be shunned or killed if they chose not to go thru with it... KWIM?

I think the article is very misleading by stating they will be killed. The quote states that her mother would have a mental breakdown....why is that so wrong? Her parents instilled what they felt are the best morals and values that they live by. She wouldn't be "stoned" to death. Her family name would be disgraced and dishonored. It's the same way that when a young girl gets preganant, her family name is disgraced, but they never "kill" the daughter b/c of it.

It's a false pretense. They are not virgins..it's just a piece of tissue being sewn back. It's a lie. They have had sex. It's just an antotomical change.
It means nothing to me. She did the deed already. The guy she is marrying will not be the first. Technically to me she is not a virgin whether she has the surgery or not.
What crack do you have to be smoking to think that because you have surgery to restore a piece of tissue that the sex you had 10 years ago didn't happen?
Why subject a woman to unnecessary surgery that carries risks? There is no health benefit therefore I do not agree with it at all.
ITA! Its hypocritical IMO...once you did it, thats it you did it...no surgical alteration can alter the deed and the experience.
ETA: I don't think the sexual organs mutilation should be brought into this conversation...they're different practices.

Re: How do you feel about this practice?
You cannot re-virginize yourself, no matter what surgery you have. I see why woman do it, but I don't think it makes sense.

Big difference. This particular article was about ADULT women who decided for themselves that they would have this done. Female Mutilation happens at a very young age, it's not done in a nice sterile office and in most cases scars a child (mentally and physically for life.
In Egypt they circumcise baby girls in the hospital the same way baby boys are circumcised here.
