I think it's insane... IMO, it's the act of sex that makes you loose your virginity, not breaking the hymen.

At least it's not for "aestetic" reasons like those that have their vageen (Jenna Jameson) reconstructed b/c they've worn it out so much!

Even though this is a totally voluntary procedure, can we compare this to countries that make women undergo female circumcisions?
I just feel like the pressure coming from family members to make sure the girls hymen is in tact in similar to women being forced to have female circumcisions... am I totally off on this one?

After reading all of these posts, IMO the similarity lies in the expectation. Women in this culture are expected to be virgins at marriage therefore they MUST have this procedure done to uphold the honor of their families... in other nations it's expected that the women have their clitoris removed just because it's what they do and what they believe.
ETA: When I say "this culture" I mean the one where women are being "re-virginized".. just wanted to clear that up.

It's a false pretense. They are not virgins..it's just a piece of tissue being sewn back. It's a lie. They have had sex. It's just an antotomical change.
It means nothing to me. She did the deed already. The guy she is marrying will not be the first.
Technically to me she is not a virgin whether she has the surgery or not.
What crack do you have to be smoking to think that because you have surgery to restore a piece of tissue that the sex you had 10 years ago didn't happen?
Why subject a woman to unnecessary surgery that carries risks? There is no health benefit therefore I do not agree with it at all.

i have to agree. i dont feel this is violating them in anyway - especially because it is an outpatient thing and voluntary. it is their personal choice to uphold these traditions.

This is such a great question bc it leads us to whether or not thier religion/culture/morals have shaped them to believe this is the 'right' thing to do. So to answer your question, I think in their hearts they do not want to do it, but feel they must or they will be unaccepted and disgrace their family.
