How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
DH and I got into a big fight tonight about Christmas and what family to spend it with and how to split it up and when the baby comes Christmas will be changing?? How do you ladies, with or without kids, split up the holidays between the 2 families??? I need some help on this bad!!!!!
It's so hard to make everyone happy and to spend Christmas with everyone!!
My family is 3 hours away and DH's familyis 600 ft down the road but we don't see them a whole bunch.

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
Up until now we have been alternating, Chirstmas Eve with one family and then Christmas Day with the other and we switch it every year.
Now that there will be two kids to cart around we may start visiting outside of the actual holiday and spend Christmas Day at home.

Unfortunately I've never had this issue. My family lives out of state, his family lives 15 minutes away. We always spend the holiday with his family. I would assume that if we did have this issue, we'd split it like the poster above mentioned...spend xmas eve with one family, and xmas day with the other.

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
We have Christmas brunch with DH's family in Suffolk, and then we head into the city for Christmas dinner with my family at my grandma's. It makes for a VERY long day, and I doubt we'll be able to do it with the baby next year. We both work on Christmas Eve, so getting into the city for dinner with my family on the Eve would be impossible, but I hope to do the Eve with the ILs next year, and Christmas day with my family. My grandma is 90 and cannot travel, so hosting ourselves is not an option for us.
How do you split now? I'd probably alternate years if your family is 3 hours away.

IN most cases I would say try to split them up as evenly as possible. You don't want one set of grandparents feel less involved or wanted...In my case we will be living in FLorida so will only be near my parents mostly....

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
Unfortunately we don't have this issue ( both my parents passed away when I was younger) , but in general we do Christmas every year at our house and my DH's family comes and a couple of my extended family members ( aunt, uncle, cousins) ...If this weren't the case, I think we would either still host Christmas at our house ( inviting both sides), or alternate years...Dividing C-mas Eve and C-Mas day is tough for you being as one set is 3 hours away I would imagine,,,tough call

We got to my Uncle's for Christmas Eve and if we get out early we stop by my IL's because they live a few blocks away and it is easy to do so.
Then Christmas around 10am my parents come over to see DS and give him his presents.
Then Christmas night we go to my SIL's for dinner and she lives the next town over.

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
This is going to be a source of major stress for me next year
With a 9 month old- I will be torn between wanting to stick to family tradition and spenidng the holidays with our families and staying up here ( we live in Orange co.) with the baby and starting our own christmas tradition.
If our family lived close enough- we would split it evenly but since we live upstate- it might be hard to pack up the baby and stay with the IL's for a few days

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
Since being married, Christmas Eve is at my in laws, but my parents are always invited and always attend.
Christmas Day we are at my cousin's house ...or someone in my family- Dh's family does not do anything on Christmas Day.
Most likely when DD is here, we will host Christmas Day so we do not have to take her out and travel to NY (we live in CT) after she has opened her presents- we will see how that goes.

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
Xmas Eve is big with my family so we spend Xmas Eve with all my aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, etc. and then for Xmas Day I have his family over for dinner. (mom, dad, brother, and 2 sisters) Works out perfect. He only has his immediate family on the island so for all the other holidays (Easter and Thanksgiving) we are ALWAYS with my family since it's a big thing. Personally, it's not festive or fun sitting around his parents all day on the holiday with nobody really there just waiting for dinner. My family does up the holidays so that's where we spend them. DH has always been fine with that.

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
We actually split each holiday 3 ways since DH's parents are divorced and all 3 sets are near each other. So, thanksgiving we eat at with my family, stop by his mom's to say hi and then have dessert and coffee at his dad's. Soooo not relaxing or fun.
Xmas eve we spend with my whole family including aunts, uncles and cousins. Xmas morning we have breakfast at his dad's and then later in the day go to his sister's for dinner with his mom's side.
Eventually something's gonna have to give cause I can't imagine doing all that when we have more than one little one to cart around.

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
I had it pretty easy because my In Laws celebrate the eve and my parents the day . Next year with the baby will be a whole different store, but I'll deal with that next year. DH also won't be off next christmas so we'll probably celebrate when he's off. He's NYPD so hes got a rotating schedule .

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
Well, DH is Jewish and I'm catholic. His mom will have a big dinner for Chanukah, usually the first night. We didn't go over yesterday because she got sick, so next weekend we're going over. Christmas Eve we spend with my parents and we usually go to my dad's side of the family in LI. This year my parents decided that we wouldn't go because they're worried if I go into labor and we'll get stuck on the LIE and not get to the hospital in time. Christmas day we spend with my parents as well, sometimes we eat over there or we'll go to my parents friends house for dinner.

Re: How do you divide up the holidays???HELP!!!
Every year is a freakin' nightmare - Christmas Eve is mine - with my family b/c we always make a big deal and we're ALL together, Aunts, Uncles, cousins, kids etc etc. -
DH's parents are divorced so we usually split the day by going to his Mom's for dinner, and I do brunch @ my house for his Dad's side ........
Honestly, I hate it b/c I don't get to spend ANY time w/ DH - And I've already told him next year w/ the baby we can do one of two things:
1. - Christmas w/ his Mom OR Dad's side in the evening after WE have had time as a family w/ the baby - and then dinner w/ the opposite side over the weekend (I'll host both if he wants me to ........as long as I don't have to do it the same day and miss out on MY own kid!!) or: 2. Have an 'open house' cocktail party so to speak on Christmas Day starting at 3 or 4ish and invite anyone and everyone to come by for drinks, appetizers, dessert - whatever .........I'm not cooking a full sit down dinner for ALL of those people and I don't have the room either -
