Re: How did you get into your career?

I majored in business economics going into college with the plan that I would go to law school. I loved my business classes. I really like accounting and decided to do a dual major in business and accounting. Took my tax class and decided I did not like accounting anymore, switched to accounting minor. Somewhere in there decided I did not want to go to law school. Planned on graduating and getting a job in finance. The summer before my senior year I got an internship with an Alumni who did commercial real estate appraisal. After my internship didn't want to do appraisal as my job. Graduated and didn't realize how hard it was to get a job. Ended up taking a job as a secratary at an umbrella company! HATED IT! Then was asked to return to appraisal company for much better salary. So I am now an appraiser. Also recently decided to try out real estate sales, took the classes and am now doing that as well. I love love love doing it, but it is slow to start and I couldn't give up my current appraisal salary.
End of my story! Chat Icon

Re: How did you get into your career?

I kind of fell into it really. Nothing to do with my college major.

Although I am now in the middle of a career change that I went back to school for. This time I am getting more "control" about it.

Re: How did you get into your career?

I attended a liberal arts college with the intention of doing something in "science" - which I always loved. The pre-med classes were extremely difficult and were designed to "weed people out". Chat Icon I ended up with a major in sociology and a minor in environmental science (satisfying my science thirst)...

Thought I would do social work, but hated it when I interned for the summer. Started working for a commercial real estate firm, assisted the controller, and decided to go back to school for my MBA in accounting and computer information systems.

After finishing my MBA I worked miserably for 2 years in public accounting to get the CPA and am now VERY HAPPILY employed in the finance department of a hospital! I love it because it marries my finance background with my interest in science. Chat Icon

Re: How did you get into your career?

Fell into my career too really.

I went to school and have my BS in MEteorology. Tried for 2 years to get a job before finally giving up and realizing that I needed to get a "real" job.

Started working in my firm as an Executive Assistant and then a few years later a position opened up in the Marketing Dept. Here I am, 6 years later, basically the head of the Marketing Dept. Love my job and the people I work with (on most days anyway!) Chat Icon

Re: How did you get into your career?

Well I never thought of Human Resources as the career I would end up in Chat Icon Chat Icon but here I am. I was really confused in college about my major and couldn't decide - wanted to go into a health profession but I am not great at math and science - so I decided to go with general business. I know I wanted to work with people so when I graduated I first worked at a financial services firm bc that is all I could find and after about 6 months, I finally found a job as an HR Asst at an ad agency in NYC, now 6 years later I am an HR Manager in NJ. i thought i was going to be the kid who never changed her college major - theater education. But one day in a writing class the teacher told us about "this cool new major called public relations and if you're interested in learning more, stay after class." The rest is history! I graduated with a BA in public relations and have been in the industry for almost 5 years and love it!

I was a high school math teacher. I got an amazing job right out of college. I was teaching and realized I hated it. I loved TEACHING, being there with the kids, but as soon as the bell rang after last period till the next morning, I was dreading it. So I quit. I bartended in NYC trying to decide what to do and my best friend said “Why not be an accountant?” which was HER profession. I though “Sure, why not.” So I went back to college and got my accounting degree and love it.

Re: How did you get into your career?

I always wanted to be a lawyer. At 16 I started working at a RE attorney's office. I continued working while I was in college. Right before graduation when I was all set to leave the attorney I was working for, we came up with an idea to start a title agency. So that's what we did. So now I own my own business (4 years now) and couldn't be happier. I just need to get my butt back into gear to get through law school, and I'll be all set.

Re: How did you get into your career?

I started out in college as a business major with an intended concentration in accounting. We had to take intro courses to all aspects of management for the BS degree and I found some interest in the HR class I was in. So I took some more and wound up changing my concentration to Human Resource Management.

When I got out of college I started in recruiting - which I knew I didn't really want but it was the easiest to get into and I needed to try it out. Less than a year into the position my boss decided to leave and at the same time a compensation position opened up. She suggested that I go for it so that I could get experience in another area of HR. I applied for the position and got it.

I did that for 4 years and then went to a finance company to be a jr generalist...not for me...so I left and went to a big entertainment company back into Compensation - but more entry level. My boss there was great and really pushed to give me more responsibility. Our department was eliminated about a year and half after I started but because of all he did for me I was able to find the job I have now as an analyst - which is what I really wanted. I really enjoy what I do and I am at a great company. Chat Icon

Re: How did you get into your career?

I've changed careers a few times.

In high school, I started going out with a guy who was a volunteer EMT. I hung out at the ambulance corps and was floored by everyone and what they did. So I joined and got on a crew of 5 people. My tenure there lasted longer than our relationship. I went to school to be an advanced EMT (paramedic type) and worked for a hospital ER and for private ambulance companies.

I wanted to work for Nassau County police ambulance but they never called. Chat Icon The dialysis runs from the nursing homes to the hospitals and back started to get to me and after a while, I began to dread going to work.

I got an office job and did that for a few years, just something till I figured out what I wanted. I met my husband and we sat down one day and tried to hash out what I should do in my career. There were two constants in a lot of my previous jobs that I loved - helping/teaching people and computers.

So at 26, I went back to school nights, full time, till I got the certifications I needed. I got a job with the company I'm at now, did Help Desk, PC Repair, Networking and project management.

Now I'm leaving this company for a better position that will tap into all my experience over the years. And I'm really looking forward to my future. Chat Icon

Re: How did you get into your career?

I didnt know what to major in in college, so my dad told me to major in business, so I did, then I needed to pick a field and he told me to major in accounting (I listened b/c I didn't have a clue)...I took my first accounting course and failed big time. I took it again and got an A and loved it ever since. Now I'm an accountant and my dad is very lucky I love my job after paying for all my school!!! And I can thank him too b/c my salary is great and the firm I work for is so good to me!

Re: How did you get into your career?

basically I've always known I wanted to work with kids...I was always into language and the brain so I did my undergrad In Speech-Language Pathology. Graduated and had a horrific experience trying to get into graduate school...its extremely competitive and very disheartening b/c I work my a$$ of during my undergrad....after moving to NC I got a job as a Language Facilitator working with Hearing Impaired Children. I work very closely with the SLP as well as teachers...so I can use my degree finally.
I will be going back to school in the fall, finally starting a Master program in Birth-Kindergarten, for Early Intervention Chat Icon

Re: How did you get into your career?

I went to College for a degree in Speech Communications...I did an internship in radio and loved it, but could not get a job and did not pursue it much.

I landed a job as an Admissions Counselor in a College because I knew the director from when I was an UG student. LOVED my job and went for a degree in School Counseling after that to advance my career in higher education.

Re: How did you get into your career?

Short answer is "fell into it". I've worn many different hats over the course of my career. I've only looked for a job once, the rest of the time I changed jobs because I was offered a position (and salary) I couldn't turn down.

Long answer is:
I majored in psychology & philosophy. I had good grades, but wasn't a serious student. My parents offered to pay for law school but I knew unless I was actually going to get good grades AND go to class, I wasn't going to do well in law school. I looked into joining the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (sort of like the Peace Corps but within the US) through my school. My main objective was to volunteer & help out.

I worked at a home for the developmentallly disabled for a year. I got a second job at a law firm so I could still afford to do the traveling I wanted and still work at my "dream job". I started working more hours at the law firm & at one point weighed my hourly rate at both & decided to forget the psychologist career path.

I worked in a law firm for several years. My roommate from college begged me to work at her company (lobbyists) doing fundraisers for the Chairman of the Board. I did event management for 10 years (high-end black tie dinners/golf tournaments).

I did a stent doing application support & development and hated it. I was getting married & we wanted to start a family. I hated working the hours doing systems administration. I started interviewing for different jobs. I opted to take a low-level, stress-free job working as an assistant to the VP of a software company versus an event director job at a museum. Outgrew the position. My boss termed the HR manager & asked me to take the job.

I leave by 5pm, can work from home when necessary, find the field interesting & can still volunteer doing events/fundraising in my spare time. The only problem I foresee in a few years is dropping both kids off at 8am at 2 different schools & making an 8:11am train. Right now I drop one off at 7:30am & the other at 8:04am, and make my train.

I started out as a cocktail waitress then I moved into stripping. After that, it was an easy transition into prostitution.

Re: How did you get into your career?

I got into fitness when I was in college. I hated nursing school, so I switched majors to Exercise Physiology.

After years as a director I wanted more, better vacation/hours/salary.

I also get saddened by childhood obesity and unhealth adults, so I went back for my masters in Physical Education.

FUTURE CAREER: To someday develop my own children's fitness company!
