Re: How did you find
ant's best friend lives there so word of mouth
i recommend all of them; newspaper, craigslist, pennysaver, and if all else fails then a broker..
(but i have noticed the nicer apts in a private home are usually through a broker)

I'm finding that as well...but not too happy about spending 1 month's rent on a broker's fee.

Re: How did you find
We found our apartment through the pennysaver.
My friend just bought a house in E. Islip and was looking for a tenant so I told my SIL and she actually took the apt.

Re: How did you find
I just stopped in any apartment complexs I liked. I found some HORRID ones for an insane amount of money...like people are smoking crack but then I found mine and love it. I finally have "normal" neighbors, so Im happy.

We have an apt in one of the Heatherwood apts. My friend rents one out east, we liked them but decided to go to a different location

Re: How did you find
I would check out apartments.com if you haven't already. You can pick out the area that you would like. I don't believe there are broker fees for the apts as well.

Re: How did you find
We spent one day just driving around the areas we were willing to live in and either walked in to see some places or called when we got home to make appts. But, we were looking for complexes only, so that was a bit easier.

Re: How did you find
We visited the Apt. complexes in our area we were looking to see what they each offered, and to view the apt sizes, etc. When we found one we liked, we went to the manager's office, put our deposit down and set up our move in dates.

Re: How did you find
We found our current apartment by way of Craigslist. Someone advertised their sublet, we looked at it and decided it was too small but we found other apartments available in the same bldg.
The apt before that was listed on Craigslist.

Re: How did you find
craigs list- but it was a broker
in NYC the fee is more then 1 month rent usually
so I wont be paying a broker when we move in 2 months
it's not worth it b/c we will only be there for 1 year

I felt the same way, but its worth it in the end. Do I think the broker really deserved it no, because she honestly didnt do much, but then again she has to get paid too.
try this website
or this one. theres a small fee if you find a place you like and want the contact info, but its less than 50 dollars.
clicky here

Re: How did you find
The last one was family.
The one before that was the Pennysaver.
Now I would rely on Craigslist.

Re: How did you find
we used a broker and to us it was totally worth it. we were on a very tight moving schedule and she found us our current apartment in 2 days. we have been there for several years now and couldn't be happier. it's the top floor of a house, the landlord is great and doesn't raise the rent on us. we still pay $1100 a month for a huge 2 bedroom.
we knew we would be there a few years though, we weren't even engaged yet. if you don't plan on being there long, it may not be worth the extra $. when we were looking, we either found complexes (all too expensive for us), basement apartments or nice house apartments going through brokers. we felt like we had little choice at the time.

I voted "other". DH and I drove to all the complexes around Suffolk County (within a reasonable distance) and chose the one we liked and thought was most reasonable.

I'm finding that as well...but not too happy about spending 1 month's rent on a broker's fee. I was not either, but after having a NIGHTMARE of a landlord who LIED to us about the apartment being legal & in turn being EVICTED with little to no notice, I would only go through a broker just to avoid this mess.
What area are you looking? If we did not buy we were going to rent in an Avalon community in Melville.
