How are you choosing a name??

Just curious as to everyone's method.

Are you reading baby name books, going online, just thinking up names, using family names only?

Are you choosing them separately and then combining or choosing them together (you and DH)?

Re: How are you choosing a name??

I've had the girl's name for a long time..and DH loves it too so we were lucky in that.

For the boy's name it was a little more difficult because I liked some and he didn't and vice versa....but eventually we came up with a name we both agreed on.

In the meanwhile, I have a list of other names that we both liked so that we can avoid this the next time.

ETA: I used a lot of the lists online...no baby book but I would have if I had to.

Well, our son will be named after DH, so that ended up being easyChat Icon

My mom got me a book, but honestly, I would just crack up laughing at the names I saw in there for girls. But I was using that.

And the ssa.gov website after we decided we liked a name.

Re: How are you choosing a name??

I had a boys name I always loved. I asked DH and he liked it al lot too, so it stuck.

Girls names I had like 3-4 I liked and asked him his opinion, he happened to really like 2 of them and we narrowed it down to those.

Boys name -- what I would have been named had I been a boy - cuz I like it and it is DH's name in Irish. Bad enough kid will have an Itlanian last name! Just kidding, relax!

Girls name - DH basically won't even discuss...Chat Icon

I had a name picked out but then that is what I name my business sooo....

Re: How are you choosing a name??

I did some looking online and made a list of my favs, but we wound up going the traditional route

My DD's name is Gianna Nicole

Gianna=in Italian means John, she is named after my FIL, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Great Grandfather

Nicole=Is my baby cousin's name-well she's not a baby anymore, she's 17, but she has a genetic blood disease and wanted a name sake after her

If Gianna was a boy, her name would have been John Frank, same reasons as above for John, and Frank is my Dad's and DH's name.

Re: How are you choosing a name??

if it's a boy...it'll be named after deceased family in their honor

if it's a girl....it'll be something we like whether it's suggested, read, or created

Re: How are you choosing a name??

We were following Jewish traditions and naming after the family members who passed on, or at least using the same first initial. My son Benjamin Simon was named after my 2 of my grandfathers: Boris, very Russian, and Simon.

We definitelly needed a name that starts with a B and I always loved the name Benjamin so it was perfect.

Re: How are you choosing a name??

We were just coming up with names - then I bought The Big Book of 60,000 baby names and we've been thumbing through it.

And pretty much every time we watch a tv show I ask DH what he thinks of the characters' names - I'm starting to drive him crazy.

Re: How are you choosing a name??

I had some names picked out that no one liked and I was watching ER one day and saw the closing credits...and I saw the name Noah Wyle and I though...hey, Noah is a good name. And here he is today. His middle name is after my dads dad who died when I was a kid, I needed a G name so we chose Gabriel. Noah Gabriel...we have a really simple last name, its the same as a HUGE international pop star whose sister had a wardrobe malfunction at the superbowl. My other boys names were AWESOME, but no one liked them. Oh well...next baby perhaps.

It's eventually going to be something we can both agree on...if that EVER happens. I am finding it very difficult to find a name we both like...for both sexes.

Re: How are you choosing a name??

I had a Chat Icon name picked out. However, we're having a Chat Icon. We're been going through the name book in sections. We each pick 5 names and then we put them in order, 1-10. That number equals the points for the name. After adding up our combined scores, the 5 top names go to the next round.

We also try a name out on the baby each night at bedtime.

I went by names I liked; DH spent lots of time going through a name book that his mom sent. I looked at it too, but not as much. We were tentatively going to name her Marie, after his grandmother, but try as I might, I just didn't love it. So one night he suggested the name we're going to use, and I loved it. She will have my middle name and her first name is very pretty and also the name of a literary character, which I like because I am an English teacher. Chat Icon And I loved the combination.

Re: How are you choosing a name??

We came up with a list of names we liked...then I decided I really couldnt' stand the first name [for a girl] so I moved the middle name to the first and came up with a list of names that could be middle names. I then had DH write 1-10 [10 being worst]. Next, I covered his numbers, wrote my own and added them up. The name with the lowest score won. We aren't sharing any of our names at this time, but I think we finally narrowed it down to a boy and a girl name.

It's important to me that our children have their own names...not named after someone else. I just want my children to feel unique and special and that we spent time naming them as opposed to just reusing names. That and enough names repeat in ourfamilies that it's almost necessary.

Next time, I'm not asking for his input.Chat Icon

Re: How are you choosing a name??

We just suggest names we like, and if we agree on it, we add it to a list. When we find out the sex, we will take out the list and eliminate them until we get down to one!

Re: How are you choosing a name??

In our faith, we are supposed to name after the deceased. We will choose names we like in English and use the exact Hebrew names of the deceased to honor them as the Hebrew names carry the honor, not the English ones. Some people match initials but it isnt a requirement. We will be naming our first child for my father and if it is a girl, we will find a female derivation of his Hebrew name.

Re: How are you choosing a name??

I looked at a bunch that I liked (went through a list for both sexes!).

Then submitted to DH.

We picked the names we both likes with the "highest" scores.
