The area I moved to in lower Westchester is gorgeous. It's a living Norman Rockwell painting. It's also the most inconvenient flucking place I've ever lived. Norman Rockwell didn't paint parking lots or stores that stay open past 5.
LI may be a steaming trash heap but it's a trash heap with strip malls and drive thru dunkin and Starbucks and there is definitely something to be said for that.
I agree.
As much as I hate the traffic - who doesn't lol - a lack of amenities is not worth zero traffic.
Part of why I've been able to s!ck it up over the years is that I tell myself there wouldn't be traffic if there weren't good places to go.
So I'm willing to take a little traffic in return for a nearby Starbucks - not to mention things like good and plentiful hospitals and health care!
I need a middle ground. And I don't want a hot, humid place. No clue where to go but we have plenty of time.
I’m 30 mins from the city. The local traffic here is worse than anything I ever experienced on LI. I laugh now when I hear people complain about LI traffic. All the roads are one lane. Everything feels so crowded. The lack of chain stores is to maintain the charm of the community. Which is nice and all but sometimes I just need Target.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to have left LI and like where I live. But nowhere is perfect.

I'm part of a group where the founding member packed up her family and went to Tulum, built a couple of jungle houses/hotels, runs her America based business from there. It looks dreamy!

I ended up talking to a chatty but very nice woman on the LIRR once about how she was visiting home after having moved to the Costa del Sol in Spain.
She lived very close to the beach in a three bedroom house and her rent was $600 a month for everything.
Her cost of living is a fraction of what it was here and she lives in paradise. She looked so relaxed.
I turned to my colleague whom I commuted with at the time and said wtf are we doing here lol.

There are many companies who value in-person collaboration. Start-ups, tech/biotech, non-profits, the arts. That’s why they built these open offices and shared workspaces. The core philosophies of these companies haven’t changed because of COVID. So while they have adapted for the time being, the day to day will eventually swing back to in office.
Obviously that’s not the case for ALL jobs, but it will be the norm for certain industries. My point is the suburbs won’t be cool forever. Give it a year after we’re all vaccinated and there will be a whole bunch of bright eyed and bushy tailed 22 year olds from the middle of the country clamoring to get to Manhattan and Brooklyn and driving the city prices up and the far flung suburbs down.
Most people I know are back at work in the office FT or close to it. I agree that young people will seek out the novelty of working and living in Manhattan over remote positions in suburbia.
If companies adapted to remote only employees why would they hire someone on LI for 100k when they can pay someone who lives in Ohio less? There is talent everywhere. Over time, those in higher cost of living areas can be penalized because of this as employers focus on hiring from out of state. DH has worked at companies that did just this. NY based companies that hired him remote but then let him go for someone in Florida with half the salary for the same job(one of the reasons he stopped considering remote positions). It’s inevitable. I’m not sure why people aren’t afraid of this.
Absolutely true. I had an interview (Huge global Corp) for remote and the salary is much less than my last salary. For the same job. Companies are looking to remote to slash costs. I refuse to do the same job with the same stress levels for less money for the luxury of being home. If people are forced to accept lower salaries , the prices of homes across the country will drop.

I keep saying, if only my daughter wasn't in school, we'd sell now and go to Florida early
It's the best time for it.
But I really don't' want to uproot her at this point.

I just heard on the news home prices on LI are up to 18% higher in Suffolk and 12% in Nassau. Low inventory and high demand... A lot more people moving out of the city, etc.
Good luck to your relatives. I was looking 5 yrs ago and the market was over priced and low inventory. I couldn't imagine looking now. It has to be much worse.

How old is she? I know its tough for kids to move but for anyone looking to get out now is the time to sell and get something cheaper down south.

My problem is jobs. Moving sounds great until you really figure out the logistics. We still have to work so that is a big thing and always afraid of “the grass is not greener”, maybe just cheaper lol

Tulum has some beautiful beaches.
