Okay, so you think LI housing prices are bad
Just take look at the price of houses in the suburbs of Dublin, Ireland, where I'm from. Most of these houses are what we call "council" or "coorporation" houses, meaning that the were built by the county and were originally rented out for about $50 a month, then people had the option of buying them for next to nothing, and they are now being sold as private homes.
By the way, they are all "terraced", or connected to another house on both sides.
The first one is 2 bed and in the same area as the movie "The Commitments" was set.
Asking Price: In excess of €360,000 ($457,000)
Type : Terraced House
Bedrooms : 2
The second one is a 3 bed and in a development that I was afraid to go to when I was a kid.
Asking Price: In excess of €410,000 ($520,000)
Type : Terraced House
Bedrooms : 3
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the salaries in Dublin are not even close to what we make over here. Image Attachment(s):

I often think that about NYC - if you see what you get for $500k - it's usually not much more than a studio..... that's why i think it's all about location - you pay so much more for the location than the home.

Yes, the economy is booming and housing prices have gone through the roof over there. My friend is looking to upgrade to a regular 4 bed/2 bath house in a development and is expecting to pay about EUR650,000 ($825,000)!!!
A house in the same development as the one my parents bought in 1988 for 69,000 sold for 1M last month

Since we are talking Dublin, lets talk Manchester. Right so we bought our house in 1999 for £81K ($150K) recently the house across the street went on the market for £195 ($363K) so had we been looking for houses now, we would be s.h.it out of luck.
Lets talk real estate in Chorlton, which is the suburb that I live in. Property runs the gamut from huge Edwardian Victorial houses with 3/4 bedrooms for £270K ($500K) to whats called a two up two down, which is basically a terraced house with 2 rooms upstairs (with a bedroom) and 2 downstairs (with possibly a kitchen extension) keeping in mind these houses did not have indoor toilets until the 70's...for up to £195K ($363)...so thats a 5 room house, for $363K...unreal
One thing to keep in mind is that we don't own the land our house is built on, we rent it from someone called a Freeholder, we pay them £4 a year. This person owns all the land around for a fair few miles, so they do make lots of money. This year we got a letter saying we could buy the land our house sits on for £1000...a snip at the price. Also, our taxes are not nearly as high as yours, we get all the same benefits as you do (actually, probably more, our council is fantastic) and we only pay around £1000 a year, on a monthly basis.
Any questions? Okay, I live in a 1930's semi detatched house with a 20foot kitchen extension. We have 3 bedrooms, 2 reception rooms, an indoor toilet and we are very happy here. Its a work in progress...we have original fireplaces in 2 of the rooms and a beautiful gas fireplace in our living room (or lounge as we like to call it)

I'm sure Farah has loads of examples, but my bf bought a 3 bedroom semi-detached house two years ago in Peaslake (outside Guilford) in Surrey for GBP 500,000 that's $928,000
I'm going to see it in September

My friend lives in a subsidized housing development in Dublin...she moved there about 15 years ago after HS when she got married. They rented for a while, but then they had kids and wanted a permanent residence. I think she got a 2% interest loan with a low down payment. Her house today is now worth about the same as the one above, but she paid only $130K or so.
The houses are attached, but they have a tremendous garden and a public park behind that, so there is plenty of room for her kids to play. She lives in the Leopoldstown development.

I think you're talking about Leopardstown - she probably lives in Ballyogan Estate and her 130K house would definitely be worth triple that now. I used to live in Foxrock and my friend lives in Glenbourne Park in Leopardstown. I've lived in the US almost 7 years and I can't believe how house prices have gone out of control. I've thought about moving back but there is no way we could afford a house like ours over there.

I can relate. We lived in Dublin for close to 2 years, thankfully DH still made his NY salary + a cost of living adjustment. The prices of everything in Dublin are insane

We pay lots of taxes. We pay a Value Added Tax on everything we buy, so thats 17.5%, but its included in the price. So income tax in the UK is something like 23% and if you make over £40K, you are taxed 40% on anything over that £40K. So we do indeed pay income tax!!! When you buy a house you also pay a stamp duty, which used to be 8% of the home total price, but I think now its gone down...
So yes, taxes. The inevitable.

Well, we live in the NY equivalent of about Forest Hill Queens or so. We bought our flat - which is 1BR, decent sized living room, kitchen and bathroom, but bedroom is a bit small and it has about a 40 ft garden - for £185K ($350K) earlier this year. It's kind of like having the ground floor of a brownstone, but we only have one apartment above us. I find that the prices are comparable to Queens or Brooklyn, but I think we get a bit more space here, and the outside space is a definite plus.
Rach - our flat owns the freehold to the entire house, which is actually a bit of a liability, because we're basically repsonsible for what goes on upstairs. We'd like to sell a share of it to the upstairs flat and we're told we could get about £5K for it.
We're looking at extending ours to make it a 2 bed, but trying to save some money in order to.
O'Donnell - I just read in the paper yesterday taht Dublin has become more expensive than London!
ETA - Rachel, your house is adorable! I love it! Did you build the extension yourself or was it done before you moved in?
ETA again - Our flat was not in great condition, either. Most 1 beds that have been done-up in the area go for about £210K ($385K or so). But we do have some nice Victoria features (our house was built in 1890) like a working fireplace in the living room, original stained glass in the entry way, and decorative moldings and a "ceiling rose" in the bedroom.

There are definitely income taxes in Ireland - higher than here. What you don't have is property tax, but you do have stamp duty when you buy a house, which is a percentage of the price of the house. I lived in London for a while too and I didn't find it quite as bad over there, but we did have poll taxes (which may be done away with now).
I think perhaps Switzerland is tax-free. Although, if you are an "artist" or celebrity from another country and decide to live in Ireland, they grant you a tax amnesty.
