House hunters, present and past, come on in!
I'm taking an informal poll here to see if I'm completely off base.
The question is when you are/were house hunting, what was your main method of finding homes to look at?

I used MLSLI.com and went to a bunch of open houses. When we wanted to see a house that was not having an open house, we would contact the list agent.

Re: House hunters, present and past, come on in!
My MIL is a REA so technically it was a buyers agent. We lived with her while we were house hunting so we looked up houses on her MLS together and she took us around.
So I guess a combination of both? I should have picked "other"!

Re: House hunters, present and past, come on in!
When I bought my house in 2008, I was not in real estate. We used a buyer's agent and also used mlsli.com a lot for our own research.
Now, as an agent, most of my buyer customers are VERY internet-savvy. I find most of my customers (and also people I encounter at open houses, because we always ask how they heard of the open house) are using MLS, Zillow, and/or Listingbook. And those who start using Listingbook get addicted because it's so user-friendly and interactive; it really helps people organize their search by allowing them to make notes, mark favorites, etc.
I have found -- and my company has done a lot of research on this, too -- that almost NO buyers are relying on print advertising in papers. We put our listings in the glossy supermarket home magazines, and occasionally get a call from that. And I have personally done ads in some local LI or town publications and even the Village Voice for select listings, and have rarely gotten any calls off of them.
So I think a strong internet presence is really key for any seller; that's what the buyers are looking at. But while I think the internet is a valuable tool to be used in conjunction with an agent, buyers are still using and still NEED agents. I have a blog on this site about this very topic!

That's odd... the houses that showed on Redfin first were probably private listings or listings by non-MLS members. Real estate companies/agents control what gets input onto each site, including MLS. And there's no time lag - if we post a listing to MLS, it shows up immediately. When we put a listing on MLS and a few other main sites (Century 21's website, for example), it then will filter out to many other derivative websites.
So there's no reason that Redfin would have a listing that wouldn't be on MLS, unless it is an exclusive of a specific real estate company OR listed by someone who does not participate in the MLS system (the vast majority of real estate companies, and all of the big ones, do!).

I use Listing book..but does anyone know how to search for homes and eliminate the Short sales and forclosures...There seems to be so many short sales. Is there anyway to do this??

Of course! You can edit your home finder criteria to elminate short sales and foreclosures. They are listed criteria, and you can check "don't want" to weed them out. If you don't know how to do that, the agent who set up your account can do it.

Agreed, I love Redfin. I find it is much more user friendly than other sites. I am a visual person so I liked seeing the house on a map in relation to other properties for sale. I also liked that it gave you it's activity (price changes, when it was last sold, etc.)

I'm not familiar with Redfin but my agent told me there is a 24 hour turn around time from putting the info into MLS/Listingbook to when it is displayed to buyers. Maybe that's the reason?

I am pretty much on MLSLI, Redfin and Trulia everyday. I love watching houses that were not in my price range drop into my range

Sorry sounds different than I meant it.
My house FIRST APPEARED on redfin, about 1am. I contacted the agent immediately. It didn't appear on MLS until a day or two later. That was my point, not that it never made it to MLS.
The same with another home I was looking at. Came on REDFIN first, then MLS a day or two later.

Remax-beyond was my go to because i liked their 'favorites' sections. I was able to rate how much I liked the house with stars, keep notes, etc. But, I'd check out mlsli a lot too, because remax didn't update as quickly.
