Real plates for dinner and Paper plates for apps and dessert is a good compromise? I personally use real plates and I don't even have a dishwasher

This is what I do. I've had up to 30 people and always use real plates and utensils for dinner, and paper for apps and dessert.

This.
I'm pretty sure if I used paper plates both my mother and mother in law would walk out and never done back.b

I have a dishwasher but never use it. It takes three washes total to get everything clean, and I wouldn't have it any other way

If that is how my mother or MIL felt after I slaved to cook for a labor intensive holiday like Thanksgiving, I would personally hold the door for both of them to walk the eff out and never come back.

Anything over 12 people we use the nice plastic plates from Costco/BJs. After cooking for hours I don't feel like doing dishes for hours too.

Re: hosting thanksgiving

I host every year. I do the table pretty with gold chargers but then have those plastic plates that look like fancy china. I set up a nice buffet though so there is more room on the table.
