Homeowners....
When you found THE house. Was it everything you wanted???
We are looking and I feel like everytime we see something there is something missing or I like and DH doesn't or the reverse.

Re: Homeowners....
We both liked it best of all the houses that we looked at, but it is by no means perfect and needs quite a bit of work, but we love the layout and once we do all the bathrooms, the kitchen, the wood floors and all the other things that need doing it'll be perfect I think you just need to look at the potential in a house. Happy house hunting!

I totally agree! This is exactly what happened with us. We walked into our house and knew this was the house for us.

I'm going through the same thing. I feel like every house we look at has something missing...or I like it and DH doesn't (or vice versa).
Where are you looking?

Re: Homeowners....
We found that our "needs" changed over time, and we didn't realize what we wanted/needed until we spent a few years without it. I thought I didn't need a garage as long as I had a basement. I have a basement, but I really wish I had a garage... We have 3 bedrooms and two baths, but with two DC, it's turning out that it's not quite enough. I don't think there is such a thing as "the" house. Maybe "the house for right now". Needs change, wants change, families and people change. If you get a house that you can expand on fairly easily, you can always keep the house you have, and make it adapt to what you need as time goes on.

Re: Homeowners....
We looked at about ehhhhh 40 houses and I took notes on every single one. Some flaws stood out more than others and some things I figured I could live with. I rated every single one on how "liveable" the flaws were. The one we finally settled on was just built so it doesn't need "work" in the remodeling sense but it does need some "Stacy and Keith" love put into it. It needs to become our home. Right now (a week ago we moved in), I feel like it's a model home. I would recommend that you take your time and don't settle until you feel that everything is liveable and workable. Good Luck!!! It's actually really fun and exciting!

Re: Homeowners....
we like our house. There are things i dont like but they the likes weigh out the dislikes....honestly me and DH wanted a house so bad and this was priced right so we went for it and if we move we move but we are ust so happy we own and there are tons of options for this house.

Re: Homeowners....
When we were looking there were certain things that we wouldn't settle for, but there were some things that it would be great if we had it, but we could live w/o it. We just prioritized - if you are looking at started homes, I think you are less likely to find EVERYTHING that you want in one house....but you will find the house that makes you both very happy.

Re: Homeowners....
No, our house was not perfect in every way and did not have every feature we wanted. The biggest minus IMO is the kitchen--it's quite small, and actually has less cabinet space than our co-op did! It's also not a style we love--it's a split, and while this style is fine with us, it's not what we would prefer.
We bought it anyway though since it had just about everything else we wanted, and all the big money items (heating conversion, roof, siding, landscaping, basement finishing) had been done already. Plus, we loved the house, yard, and location.
We looked around for a very long time, and nothing we saw in our price range was perfect. This house had the least number of minuses, and there is potential to expand, so it fit our needs much better than others.
I would say that you may not find a house that perfectly fits your needs, so you need to find a house that will fit most of your needs (or at least the absolute, must-have ones) and a house that you just like, feel comfortable in, and can picture yourself living in over time.
Good luck!

Re: Homeowners....
It wasn't everything but had the potential to have everything we wanted. We also saw a ton of houses (180-200) over the course of 16-18 months.

Re: Homeowners....
The home itself was nothing like what we wanted BUT the property and location were.
Our attitude was (and still is) that we can always make changes to the home, not the location.

Re: Homeowners....
no it wasn't everything we wanted, but we are in the process of remodeling right now. It had all the bones we wanted. Good entertaining space, nice size yard, and room to improve. It hasn't been easy, we are making it our home! You will find something. Keep your opitions open and your mind open to possiblilties of a house. You will find THE ONE! GL!

Well said.
ETA - Our house isn't everything we've always dreamed of, it's not perfect, and we likely won't stay forever. However, it has everything we need right now, lot of stuff we love, and suits our needs for right now.

Re: Homeowners....
We found 3 houses that were the "one." I love the house we wound up with, but of course I wish there were things that we have that we don't. Unless you are really lucky in your search or able rebuild the way you want, I think it's really hard to find the perfect house.

Re: Homeowners....
I don't think we settled for something less than what we wanted but, we kept our list simple.
- More than 1 bathroom
- Not on a main road
- Ability to expand at some point and not lose the entire yard
We found a house at the low end of our price range that met our three major characteristics and are very happy with it There are things now that annoy me - like our garage is attached but, there's no door from it into the house - but, they are all fixable.
We see ourselves staying here for awhile.

Re: Homeowners....
The best advice I give anyone is to write down all your must haves and your "would like to haves" and then go see everything in your price range.
Then, make sure that when you find a house you think "may be it" that you remind yourself of what you want...and never settle.
That doesn't mean that the house you get has everything on your list, but that what matters the most is there.
I also think that you also have to remember that you can never add more land to your property and you can't move it to another neighborhood. So definitely be happy with the block you will be on, and the plot of land you have.

Re: Homeowners....
Honestly, no it wasn't everything we wanted. We had to work within our budget and give up some things, or I should say wait for them. For example, we wanted a finished basement. Our house has a basement but it's not finished, so we're going to have to do it.
Don't get discouraged, your house is out there and when you find it you'll just know!!!!!!
