Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

My DD is 16 months and recently started getting diaper rash. Today it is awful. Some spots are so raw they are almost bloodyChat Icon I have tried:

-triple paste
-purple desitin
-a & d
-aquaphor

Nothing works. ANy at home remedies that have worked for you? I heard something with baking soda maybe?

Also I let her soak in the tub this morning and then run around with no diaper for like 15 minutes so I'm hoping that helps. Help!

Re: Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

Try cloth diapers for a bit if you can. They will def help clear it up.

16 months is kinda old to just start to get diaper rash.

I'd take the kid to the pediatrician to make sure it's just a diaper rash.

Letting her run around naked is not a bad idea in the meanwhile.

Re: Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

I was told that if the purple desitin doesn't start to clear up the rash in two applications then more than likely it isn't diaper rash. Consider going to your pediatrician to see if it is something else like a topical yeast infection as that can look similar but needs a different medicine to clear it up.

Thanks, I called the ped earlier and am waiting for a call back. She is on a slow transition to whole milk (she was on alimentum for a sensitivity) so her bottles are like 1/2 and 1/2 at this point. Wondering if that has to do with it. Hopefully I'll get some help from the dr.

Don't some yeast infections or other type infections look like diaper rash and need a Rx for?

Luke warm bath with baking soda. Cleared dd up big time within 1 use. No soap just water and baking soda. It really worked wonders just last week Let her soak for 15 mins then pat dry

You could also get Lotramin. It's for yeast/fungal infections. My dr told to just buy it otc. It was the same exact prescription as what I had been give previously but the prescription had clotrmin (anti itch) so I just applied them separate

Re: Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

DS had the same issue when we transitioned him to milk after being on Elecare. I used a mixture of Desitin and Aquaphor. Lots of baths too.. I did 1oz of milk per 6oz of formula for 3-4 days and then increased it by an ounce until we were at full milk bottles. It took a while. He also got severely constipated.

Re: Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

The only time DS had a diaper rash that bad was when he had a reaction to an antibiotic. Probiotics helped for that. I agree with the above that it may be more than a rash. Otherwise, my friend says her ped dermatologist tells her to use straight zinc oxide (the main active ingredient in all those ointments). She says it works wonders.
I read here on the boards about baking powder and like pepto or something. I tried it back then but all it really did was sooth it for DS not clear it.

Yes! I actually just googled it and I'm thinking this may be what she has since none of the creams are helping at all. I actually now remember DS having it years ago and having to put lotromin on it. Ugh, I hate waiting for phone calls!

Re: Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

dd#1 used to get them sooooo bad....i used a combo of destin a&d and balmex..i would mix a batch of it in a small tupperware container with small q-tips ..it usually would work like a charm....but the pediatrician told me if it didn't work well i could put mylanta and baby powder on it....never had to but she said that would work well...good luck and i agree with the other posters that you should be sure that its not a yeast infection if it doesn't clear up after a week

Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

2-3T of baking soda in the bath twice a day, let her run around naked to air it out, Use just warm water and a washcloth to wipe her and use a blow dryer to make sure she is dry.

I agree though it could be yeast or an allergy. I also suggest Grandma El's diaper rash cream. I buy it from nickisdiapers.com and it cleared up my son's allergy rash after 2 times when triple paste/desatin/aquaphor wouldn't. I also suggest booty balm form the same store.

Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

Maybe yeast? Hopefully some nystatin or other anti fungal cream will clear it up.
I use coconut oil at every diaper change, that stuff is awesome! My DS tends to get yeast between his legs and since using the coconut oil, no yeast despite this heat and humidity.

Thanks everyone. I think it is a yeast infection. The doctor told me that since the creams didnt work I should use an anti fungul cream. He told me to get Lotrimin AF. She seems to be more comfortable now so I'm hoping it is working!

I use coconut oil for diaper rash, baby lotion, cradle cap, pretty much everything! You can get it in any health food store and it is very inexpensive. It is a natural healer. My son was getting rashes on both a&d and desitin and since I switched he hasn't had a single rash. It also smells great!

DS had a really bad diaper rash for about a week. It started to blister and bleed. Chat Icon

DH prescribed a medicine for yeast infection and it cleared up in 1 day! I was a bit uncomfortable that he prescribed it and didn't take DS to the ped but it worked out well.

Re: Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

mylanta, a & d (or desitin whichever you have) then triple paste...let the mylanta "dry" for about a min (if you can)

works great...if its a yeast infection though, you will be an rx

My 2 yo has a nasty diaper rash , he never gets them! When he poops we wash him in the tub, no wipes at all. I used a combo of a&d and triple paste, very very thick layers. He looked so much better now, almost cleared up

Re: Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

Just to update, turns out it was yeast. The Lotrimin cream cleared it up! Lately though she has been getting little spots on her belly . It's right across where the diaper closes. I think it's an allergic reaction to something in the diaper (recently switched to Kirkland brand which DS always used). I bought some new diapers that I'll use today and see of theres a difference. If not, back to the doc!

Re: Home remedies for severe diaper rash?

glad to see it cleared up, i just dealt with this with my newborn! but i guess i'll just state what i dealt with in case anyone else runs into the same problem: turns out i had to dry him after wiping him, the moisture was getting trapped in the diaper, i also use butt paste which seemed to help a lot. i did buy a box of pampers sensitive but i don't know if that made a difference or not since i went back to non-sensitive and he seems to be doing fine.

Coconut oil. The baby will smell like a pina colada, but it works!
