Holy Insurance Batman!!!
I spent most of my life in the South where things are cheap, so when shopping for our home, it took me awhile to get used to the older homes, then I had to get used to the insane housing prices, after that I had to get used to insane property taxes and now.... INSURANCE.
We just got our first quote and it was $2300 for $450 of coverage and a $1000 deductible. Somebody PLEASE tell me that this is insanely high and that homeowners insurance is closer to $1200 a month. Please?! Seriously, is this normal?

Re: Holy Insurance Batman!!!
Our homeowners insurance is 1000 a year (just went up from 900), so yes that seems high. I think we are covered for 400,000.

I'm about 100 yards from water in Centerport, and I only pay $1600 a year. State Farm wouldn't cover me as a flood risk,so I had to shop it out (and glad I did).

We pay about $1300 a year. Don't know why but I think that's high. I also have $1000 deductible. It's with State Farm.
I will say that I really like State Farm. They covered a loss I had better than I could ever hope for.

Re: Holy Insurance Batman!!!
Yes, sorry I meant a year not a month. If it were a month I'd have moved back to Charlotte immediately, husband or no husband!
My parents have State Farm and my grandparents and their parents etc. and have always had great luck. I'm going to make sure thats one of the companies quoted.
We do have things that I would imagine make our premium higher, our dormer has a flat roof, we're a mile from the water and we have a buried oil tank (we're switching to gas next year, but with closing costs etc it's just not in the budget right now).
We're supposed to talk this morning, now that I had a bottle of wine and some sleep last night. Hopefully I get better news. You guys are amazing!

Re: Holy Insurance Batman!!!
While you’re shopping for home insurance quotes, get one from The Hartford too. They have been really good with my claim and I recommend them to everybody whenever I can. I am a member of AARP so have their car and home insurance through AARP.

Good to hear!
For OP- State Farm you wont be eligible for, due to location/proximity to water.
You may be eligible for CMAP coverage.

Re: Holy Insurance Batman!!!
The flood insurance is what is going to kill you. We looked at a house near the water too and the homeowners ins actually wasn't so bad, but the flood ins was crazy. And from what I understood, there's not really too much shopping around for flood ins. I think the rate is just based off of the exact distance you are from the water. I think FEMA or one of those agencies just dictates the amount. Even with all that though, your original quote still seems high. We were going to buy, literally, right across from the water, and it still wasn't as high as your quote.
