This is awful. I have been taking my DS here since he was months old. He loves this place. I live literally five minutes away. $20 to park is ridiculous. I agree, they will lose tons of people over this. I would gladly pay a fee to park as a non resident but no way could I afford $20

RESIDENTS ARE ONLY $5

I am on the border and in the Town of Islip

Im in the same situation. 5 minutes away but Im TOI. Are they going to automatically mail all TOB residents stickers or is it going to be something you have to ask for? Maybe I can take my parents sticker since they never go there..

I'm in TOI as well... 5 mins away in Holbrook... I took my dd there the other day... I was very much looking forward to "bringing her up" there this summer and I refuse to do that at $20 each time... Mr softee sales will be WAYYYY down this summer LOL

Is it $5 without a sticker like the beach is, or $5 even if you have a sticker?

There are so many great, free parks in our town, it's a shame they will be charging the residents. I don't think its worth $5 to see their animals to be honest (Suffolk County Farm is free) or walk on the trail. Heritage park has a great walking trail

I hope it's at least free if you have a sticker, especially since they started charging for stickers last year. We're are close and would still go but maybe not as often.

Holtsville Ecology Center charging??

I called and if you have a brookhaven sticker it's free, if not it's $5 for residents and $20 for non-residents. if non-residents want a Brookhaven pass, it's $350 for 2 years which is insane being the islip pass for non-residents is $50

Yikes that's a lot. I get why they have to charge but that is a high fee. Sad because I grew up going there all summer, my oldest son did but now my youngest wont.

Oh well.

I am also a short distance away but town of islip. we use to go all the time because it was free. I really think they are going to have to add a lot more to charge 20 dollars each time.

I don't see how there is anything at the ecology site worth $20 to park.

Holtsville Ecology Center charging??

All other towns charge non residents to park at their beaches and parks. Glad Brookhaven is doing this. They were considering closing the center. So happy its not closing!!

Yup! I have never heard of $20. Even for the beach.
that is insanity and that place will be empty... mark my word.
Sad how they just shot themself in the foot.

NOBODY will pay $20. For what? It's not even all that big

Its absolutely NOT greedy. The ecology center was slated to close due to budget cuts. This will keep it open. If its not worth it to you, then don't go there.

Exactly.

My son used to go to a special needs surf program at Gilgo Beach. They charge $35 for non residents to park. Most beaches charge $$ for non residents. $25 for Hoyt Farm for the sprinklers I believe, $25 for Ventian Shores, $10 per person for Shipwreck Cove, etc.

$20 is absurd to park. $5-7 I could justify.

I think long-term they are going to regret this because they aren't going to get enough non-residents willing to pay it.

i think enough brookhaven residents will be happy enough to pay $5 to go or get the pass (which I already have). I'm glad Brookhaven got with the times and started charging nonresidents. I actually might welcome it being a bit less croweded in the summer...it at least will cut down on the Mr. Softee line!Chat Icon

I agree. I don't mind paying to go, Im OK with that. I get why they did it and that they were even thinking of closing it so they have to make up the money somehow, I get that. But $20? That seems really high.

At least at those places you can spend a whole day for that price. This place isn't much...other than maybe the pool...but they charge to get in there on top of the parking I believe.
What there warrants $20. The playground? I can go to any free neighborhood playground.
I can see charging to see the animals.
But not $20 to.park at a.playground. that's pretty much all it is.

Again, I totally see why they would charge. Why should the town of brookhaven residents have to shoulder that cost for the rest of us to enjoy, and keep it open. I TOTALLY get that. The Sprinkler parks though, you can spend the day there, it is worth the fee. Also, there are several towns that have sprinkler parks, so chances are you have the option to get into your local one for free. Again, I don't mind paying, but $20 is steep for that place. You can walk through in 1/2 an hour.

I don't think, even if it is empty, that they will be sorry however. They weren't making money on them when it was packed, so it is not like they are taking a loss on those who choose not to go.

Agreed!

I also think it will get a lot more residents to pay for the pass.

I called and if you have a brookhaven sticker it's free, if not it's $5 for residents and $20 for non-residents. if non-residents want a Brookhaven pass, it's $350 for 2 years which is insane being the islip pass for non-residents is $50

If you live in the town of Brookhaven how do you get a sticker?

Thanks

I would guess you'll be able to buy it there once they start charging. I always get mine at the Davis Ferry lot. It's a two year pass and you can get it for two cars if you bring both registrations.

You can go to Town Hall or the Parks and Rec. building on Hawkins. You need proof of residency and your car registration. That is how it was last year anyway.
