I always say HI to the babies also!

There is a little boy who lives in our apt complex, and every morning i go to work, he is standing by the slider and says HI

and almost every time he also says, where is your car!?Chat Icon

Re: Hi...my name is Rachel and...

In other people's defense, they may be protecting themselves. In this day and age, you never know who is out there. One time when my older nephew was 2, I took him to Toys R Us and I couldnt fold his stroller. I told him we needed help and he started to scream "HELP" repeatedly at the top of his lungs. I was terrified that someone would think I was kidnapping him.

Re: Hi...my name is Rachel and...

I'm wondering if some people just don't realize. I know I tend to not pay attention to kids that aren't related to me (please forgive me, I know that sounds harsh) and might not even notice one was waving to me or saying hi. In my defense, if I did notice, I would never not say hello back!

That is just mean. I love when I am in the store and a little one says hello to me. I get all excited and start smiling at them and waving and saying hi back. I think it's adorable Chat Icon

Re: Hi...my name is Rachel and...

DH and I always say "hi" back to little kids. And we wave. Usually every time they say hi, we say it back. One time we were at the fireworks and were sitting on a blanket with my family, and some little boy took a liking to DH, so he just walked over and hung out with him. Kept saying hi and waving. It was so cute! Chat Icon

Aww, poor Ava Chat Icon I really just don't get people.
We always wave or say hi to kids, regardless of where we are. Even when I am in my car and a kid and I make eye contact I give a little wave.
Actually, even DH will say hi or wave to kids. On our honeymoon in Tahiti, it started to rain one day so we went to the grocery store for something to do Chat Icon Anywhoooo, we were in the store and this little boy was playing with a ball. DH started to kick the ball back and forth with the kid. It was sooo funny Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry for the hijack Chat Icon

Re: Hi...my name is Rachel and...

As long as I'm not distracted, I always say "hi" to kids who initiate the greeting. Kids love eyebrows, especially when they move (it's something that all babies are tuned into for some reason....), so if I see a little kid looking at me, a lot of times, I'll just bounce my eyebrows up and down for them. They get a kick out of it, and if the parents look around, they have no idea what's going on.... Chat Icon

I'm sure it helps that I have my own 15mo and 4yo, so I'm tuned into kids more now. I don't think I responded as much 5 years ago.

People are in their own little world most of the time, and don't notice anything going on around them. Plus, with everything going on in society lately, I'm sure many people don't want to be accused of anything inappropriate. You can never tell what someone else will think is out of line. It's just safer to ignore everyone around you, including kids. It's sad, but unfortunately, it's a part of our current culture. Chat Icon

Re: Hi...my name is Rachel and...

I know this happens with bryan alot too. he like saying hi to random strangers and many do say hi back but some dont- mostly the men. its sad cause I dont want him to get the idea that people in general are not friendly- It kills me that they dont Say hi back. i always do to other kids.

I think it's great when a child says Hi!
But I think people think it's not okay to say hello to a little kid!Chat Icon

Well, I will say this. For the most part, I would never say hello to a little kid that I didn't know. Cute or not, I'm essentially a stranger. But I have in the past said hello to little kids when DH and I are in the diner and you see that little face pop up over the back of the booth. That I think is harmless.

I agree with you....

I thought that parents are teaching their children not to talk to strangers....then you get mad when a stranger doesnt talk to your child....I dont understand.

I guess Im mean but I usually do not talk to children I do not know....

I agree this is probably the case and it's a sad thing.

However, if a little kid says "hi" to me I always say hi back. And my DD also gets upset when someone doesn't say hi to her so I feel your pain!

Re: Hi...my name is Rachel and...

Really, awwww! When I'm out with Julia she gets TONS of hi's, it actually is a little annoying at times....like when we go food shopping Julia has to say hi to everyone that walks past her, and they all have to stop and tell me how beautiful she is then gets into conversation with me, so it takes me longer to get my shopping done! lol

Same when were out eating too.
