Hi Everyone
I've been gone for awhile for a very bad reason. 
My mom called me last Thursday to say that her husband was going to the hospital to get checked out because he wasn't feeling well. He had been visiting his mother, who is very ill, and was far from home.
Everyone thought it was a great idea for him to go and get checked out. That's what health insurance is for, right?
Well, my mom got the call at 4:30 am that he passed away. My DH and I drove her out to that hospital (2 hours to get to her house, 3 more hours to get to the hospital), DH drove stepdad's car back to the house.
Mom was/is a wreck. Arranged a wake, flowers, and burial all last week.
I ended up getting food poisoning from whatever I ate between the two wakes and missed the funeral. 
DH is going to take me to the cemetary tomorrow so I can pay my last respects. Then, I'm going to my grandma's (which is where my mom is staying) to help her do the thank you cards.
What a horrible, horrible mess. I know this sounds cliche, but cherish everyone you have.
We thought this was no big deal. And, now we feel guilty and stupid.
I can't believe how much has changed in a week.

Without going into too much detail, it was something that he thought wasn't going to be a problem, but my mom (a nurse) had always been concerned because of his family history and some symptoms he was showing.
We can't be certain- we didn't have an autopsy done. If his kids want to have that done in the future, she won't stop them, but she's not going to request it because we're all pretty sure we know what it was.
