9/11 responders NEED health care to deal with the laundry list of issues we all have. Issues we developed because we were helping YOU, or your DH or your cousin's brother's best friend, etc etc etc
Easy for you to say since 9/11 has directly affected you.
Try explaining wants vs. needs to a middle class family in Alabama who struggles to put food on the table every day and counts on these tax cuts.
Having to pay an extra thousand or two a year in taxes could mean the difference between having pasta for dinner and having cat food.
  I was staying out of this and still am, but THIS is disgraceful.

Yes it is disgraceful that the Democrats want to tax the hell out of middle class america. I think people really underestimate how much more in taxes the Democrats want MIDDLE CLASS AMERICA to pay.
And if you don't believe me, why don't you figure out how much more you are going to pay in taxes once the tax cuts expire.

The easiest way to do this would be to scroll down to where you can put in your own numbers.
Put in your household income and filing status and select year 2010. See how much tax you are paying.
Then use the same household income and change the year from 2010 to 2000 (the Clinton era). See how much more you are paying in taxes.
I would definitely not consider myself wealthy. I don't make over 250k a year. However once the tax cuts expire, I will easily be paying THOUSANDS more a year in taxes.
Can America REALLY afford that kind of tax increase?

As of August 2010, Congress still hasn't made those changes legal. If Congress doesn't act before New Year's, all brackets will automatically revert to where they were in 2000, meaning a big tax increase for everybody. But hopefully Congress won't really do nothing, they'll just follow the path of least political resistance, and temporarily freeze all brackets at their current levels until after the 2012 elections. (You heard it here first!)

In regards to the initial post, I do find it reprehensible that those who put their lives on the line for others are always neglected by the federal government. Veterans, volunteers and servicepeople are always getting the short end of the stick for their selflessness.

The Zadroga Bill is something so significant that to ignore or argue other government issues in spite of it is silly.
Why are people so against a piece of legislation that would help those who selflessly put their own lives and health at risk for the good of our country?
Do we forget that so many of our grandparents or great grandparents were able to create lives and jobs from the GI Bill? What would have happened if that was never passed?

Because as I said previously... the way our political climate is currently shaped we are in a tit for tat atmosphere. The respective parties need to support the people (and states) that they represent.
Let's face facts (and reality) for a second without letting our New York bias get in the way.
Why would the GOP openly allow the Zadroga bill to pass without getting concessions on other issues that they (and their voters) support?
Maybe if 9/11 happened in Dallas instead of New York, the GOP would really support this. But the GOP gets absolutely ZERO support (and votes) from New York. That's just the way it is. The GOP has to look out for the people that support them (the RED states - New York is a BLUE state). And it's not even like the GOP is dead said against the bill. The GOP openly said they would support the Zadroga bill if the Democrats would support exending the tax cuts, something again that our DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT supports.
You are right, they aren't related and it's a shame that this is going on with the 9.11 families. But since the politicans are trying to be total azzholes to each other, this is the climate we live in.
I support the Zadroga bill as it's a small price to pay for people that helped on 9/11.
But I can also understand why the GOP voted against it, knowing that the Democrats voted against extending the tax cuts.
So again for the third time, I just explained how one situation relates to the other.

And yes, middle class needs to get purchasing power back.. and I think there should be a better way to identify what is wealthy based on geographic location and family size etc.. it should not be a flat rate.
This is a fair point; I agree that the line between middle and middle - upper class is murky. That is where our representatives come in. The five LI reps need to advocate for our interests regarding LI income and what it means to be wealthy v. just getting by.
If the line has to be drawn somewhere, I, personally, would still much rather give a tax cut to people making 50k or 100k than people making 250k, even on LI. I know plenty of others will disagree, though.

when did the government stop becoming responsible and grateful and indebted to those who put their lives on the line (both during 9/11 and for Vets) so that we can have a freely function democratic government, where the same congressmen and senators who are denying them help after all they have done, can even be a congressmen or senator is a free country in the first place.....should be the question.
Democratic/Republican - does it really matter, neither or perfect and this government is a sham at this point, it operates like any other big business and not in the best interest of the citizens.
Shame on all of them.

I'm not an idiot. I understand what you're saying for the third time. I STILL just can't believe you're OK with it and defending and SUPPORTING a government that will let the health of these people decline to make a point. It's disgusting!!!
FWIW, I can't even begin to tell you how many Red Cross volunteers I worked with that were from Texas, Wyoming, Tennessee, Alaska, Florida, etc etc etc. People ALL Over the country are feeling the effects of this....not just my blue blood

seriously  go relearn history since The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress which announced that the thirteen American colonies then at war with Great Britain were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire.

If tax cuts are to be implemented, they need to be implemented ACROSS THE BOARD, as they were during the 2001 act. That means everyone from the poor to the wealthy gets a tax break. That is really the only fair way to do it (and again, I am FAR from being wealthy).
The wealthy already pay a higher percentage of taxes based on our current tax brackets, yet people keep saying "tax the wealthy". If we had a flat tax, then I could understand. But we have tax brackets for a reason. The wealthy are being taxed more! Where do you want the line drawn?
Did you happen to look at the link I posted to see how much more in taxes you will be paying? A household that makes 120k a year will be paying over $6000 more in federal taxes a year if the tax cuts expire.
Would you consider 120k "wealthy" in Long Island? We just had a debate over this last week.

isnt that the point of the government? I would think paying back those who answer a call to service for THIS COUNTRY deserve to have the government step in and help them when they have lasting repercussions from doing so? What do you think the government should do, shake their hand and tell them to be on their way, and whatever repercussions there are from serving the country to figure it out on their own, even in failing health?

excuse me but you don't know me at all. I would hardly refer to myself as a liberal New Yorker. I'm not really all that big on government to begin with. But what I DO know is what's right!! When those planes hit, I did not look in the mirror and say, Hey I'm a democrat, I better get down there. I looked at myself and said I feel helpless just sitting here doing nothing. I'm qualifies to help and I feel like I need to do just that. Help. Anyone I can.
What, my dear, did you do?
And you begrudge me the medical benefits to deal with the LAUNDRY list of physical ailments I deal with daily from spending 9 1/2 months of my life helping?
