here's a topic: publishing salaries

Apparently the local newspaper published the salary of every employee in my school district today to show how 'overpaid' we are.

It lists our name and our salary... but not how long we've worked or our degree.

I'm not really too bothered by it since the salary scale is on the web and people could figure out what i made if they really wanted to, but a lot of the other members were a bit ticked about this.

has this ever happend to you? Just wondering your thoughts on this.

I think that would bother me. It's no one's business. I think, because you're a teacher, that the public thinks your salary is fair game. I wonder if they'd do that to someone in the private sector. (I know CEO salaries are made public, but that's not the same.)

I wouldn't be bothered if it said something like, "A teacher with x years experience and a master's degree earns x amount." Putting your name there is wrong, IMO.

I'd seen the 'Top 10' salaries published before... but never the entire payroll.

I know what most people were complaining about is it doesn't talk about anything else that they do... Like one aid makes a good salary, but she works more days, helps with CPR, and has been there for 20 year... So to someone who doesn't know that, they may think she's overpaid.

I would be very upset about it. what are they trying to prove anyway? do they want to outsource teaching jobs to India too?

if they want to see overpaid people, look at politicians, actors and CEO's. teachers IMO are NOT overpaid

Apparently one of the board members has had it out for teachers for a while... There's a big budget debate going on... the schools are asking for last years budget, but the board wants to cut by 500,000... but meanwhile, we desprately need a new elementary school... we have no closet space since every single one has turned into a classroom or an office - there are upwards of 28 kids in some rooms... and the area is growing big time...

but i guess they're trying to say, 'this is why our budget is too high... they make too much money'

but meanwhile, we make less than most counties in the area....

sorry, that turned into quite the rant.

oh well, i'm leaving the county in 2 months anyways...

Re: here's a topic: publishing salaries

I htink if they are going to publish the teachers saleries then it should be a full blown release of all salaries and ALL financies incurred in the school.
I hate to say it, but ANY job thats paid for by taxes SHOULD be reviewed (teachers, politicians, police, fire, courts ect)

I can totally understand your frustration. Unfortunately it's the case everywhere- at least in NYC I don't have to worry about my name being in the paper with my salary since there are about 80,000 of us. Some people think teachers should take a vow of poverty!

I agree that tax-funded positions should be reviewed, but I see no purpose in putting a person's name with their exact salary there.

And I think that, since budgets are so complex (I've seen my school's) I think the layperson would still tend to point to teachers being overpaid because understanding how budgets work is no easy feat.

Re: here's a topic: publishing salaries

That would bother me. It's one thing to disclose how much teachers are paid on average in a district or what the starting salary is, but I don't understand the reason behind listing the salary of each employee. I don't tell people what I make, so why should a newspaper disclose that?

Yeah, i think that's what bugged most people... that it gave their name, and then their salary...

Debra Lastname $-----

I'm a first year teacher though, so my salary is easy to figure out anyways....

but say if someone coaches, they'd have an additional stipend, but it wouldn't be published that it's their teaching salary + their stipend for being coach of the tennis team or whatever...

This would absolutely bother me. But you know what, it's yet ANOTHER way for taxpayers to justify themselves for voting down school budgets and subsequently destroying our childrens' well-rounded educations.Chat Icon

This happened last year in my district. They published the teacher's initials and NEVER said how many years, credits beyond our master's and the other extra-curricula activities we do to get to that amount.

Oh, and may I add we are the SECOND LOWEST paid in Nassau countyChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh, yeah, and we are currently in contract negotiations. SUX to be me.
