maybe its just me (totally possible) but I always make it without ricotta. I shred mozz and put that in it, put it in the dish, then cover it with more shredded mozz and some romano or parm.
I've always associated ricotta with stuffed pasta dishes or lasagna.

My DH was trying to tell me that it doesn't have ricotta cheese
I told him I have never had it without and that it was just macaroni and gravy without it!

my mil made us lasagna with cottage cheese once, needless to say it never made it in the house, dh threw it out in the garbage on the way in the house
i say with ricotta but not a lot
