Heard something this weekend...
Is it true that if you don't eat what you're craving, your child can end up with birthmarks?

what?

I have never once heard this and to be quite honest, it sounds completely and utterly ridiculous. One of those silly old wive's tales.

I didn't want to say, but yes, thank you. It sounded ridiculous to me also. I wanted PP to tell me this sounds made up.
It's one of those things you hear from people that know everything, about everything.

This belongs on my thread from last week where I asked people to post the wackiest "warnings" they've been given thus far!
People mean well. Just remember that!

Re: Heard something this weekend...
Old wives tale. My DH's family is Scicilian and they told me this when I was preggo. (not sure what nationality it comes from) But they told me if I was craving something and couldn't have it that moment (or wouldn't have it) to touch my arse so the birth mark would go on the baby's hiney. Not to touch face.

I think that's an old Italian thing! I've had a couple of Italian friends say that!

Re: Heard something this weekend...
This reminds me of an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond when Debra is pregnant:
Marie: And never deny yourself of any cravings or else the baby will be born with a birth mark in the shape of that food.
Frank: That's why Ray has a cannoli on his @$$.
Since the characters are Italian, it must be the Italian old wives tale.

Re: Heard something this weekend...
Definately a Italian old wives tale, when my sister was pregnant she wanted eggplant parm, my gf mother made it and made me deliver it in a snowstorm or the baby would have a eggplant shaped birthmark.

It's true but the two aren't linked. It's also true that if you scratch your nose your baby can end up with birthmarks, or if name your child a trendy name they can end up with birthmarks, etc...

Yes, definitely an Italian old wives tale. Like the above... My mom said the birthmark on my knee is the shape of a zeppole because she denied a craving while pregnant. If it means I get to eat whatever I'm craving... I'll go with it too!

I was also told that it is bad luck to sit with the corner of a table pointing at you while pregnant

my co-worker told me that he went out to get his wife a bagel at 2am when she was pregnant because he didn't want to risk a birthmark in the shape of a bagel on his son, LOL

Re: Heard something this weekend...
Some old Italian lady said that - didn't she ?? She was probably related to me.
Personally I think "cravings" in general are a load of bull - and a pregnant woman's exucse to eat whatever the hell she wants -
Now, NOT saying that as pregnant women we shouldn't have an excuse to eat whatever the hell we want - but the whole "Oh I'm CRAVING such and such" and "The BABY wants XYZ" - I don't buy it.
I haven't died from not giving into my taco bell, jelly donut, chocolate ice cream 'cravings' ...........

Re: Heard something this weekend...
lol. I denied myself quite a few cravings while i was pregnant either because I didn't have it in the house or because it's just too unhealthy. DD doesn't have a single birthmark. Old Wives Tale. Where the heck do they come up with this stuff?
