Re: Health insurance...adding child

The cost of insurance is ridiculous, especially for family. On the bright side, if it's taken out pre-tax then it might not be so bad bc it lowers your taxable income.

If it makes you feel better, my insurance goes from being free just for myself to paying $397/month for both boys. DH is self-employed and will just get his own. If he was on it it would be $575/month.

I think that you might be able to get health insurance through the state. Every child is entitiled to coverage for no cost. Its good insurance too. I believe its called Child Health Plus. I can try to get you more info if you'd like.

Re: Health insurance...adding child

Please, my husband is self employed and I'm a SAHM......what we pay for health insurance, and lousy insurance at that is beyond ridiculous.

AND we just got a letter saying it went up again.

If this keeps up I'm definitely going to have to head back to work soon.

Its definitely not easy.

Health insurance is one of the reasons I will be going back to work. DH's insurance is $$ but mine is paid for completely by my company.

My boyfriend niece needed this formula also...it really is a shame that they charge so much for such a necessity. I hope your little girls feels better with the switch in formula.

I actually looked into this today...I don't think I qualify for it...the income limits are before tax right?

I guess everyone is in the same boat. $177.24 per pay period for insurance is just insane. We're going to see if it's any cheaper under my boyfriends but he has BCBS also.

Re: Health insurance...adding child

Trust me I am feeling your pain. I pay 265 alone for mine.. .self - employed and its an extra $200 a month for DD so I'm adding her for just a month to cover the hospital and then changing to child health plus. DH's insurance would cover her but its still more money and his insurance is kind of stinky.

Re: Health insurance...adding child

You have to make under a certain amount of $ to qualify for NY Child Health Plus. When DH was laid off for almost a year a few years back, we still were above the income level.Chat Icon

We are above the income level as well but we are still getting Child Health Plus for our DD. Our insurance would go up from $270 a month for just DH and I to $500 a month for family ins. Through Child Health Plus we picked United Healthcare (there are a couple of different plans you can chose) and we will pay the full premium of $120 a month. Much cheaper than DH's ins. Once we have a 2nd child it won't be worth it but for now it's sooooo worth it.

Wow! That is a huge increase! I think ours will be going up $100 a month which isn't so bad - $25 a week.

it may be cheaper - it doen't matter the type of the insurance - it matters on how much the company subsidizes

me and my dh both have BCBS but i pay nothing out of pocket for myself but my husband pay $60 a month under his company for the exact same plan
