HDMI cables for tv's
are they really necessary?
I need a 40 ft one for where my tv is to where my cable box will be. That wire is about 200 bucks; not sure if its worth it

Definitely, BUT don't go to Best Buy and get them. I ordered the cheapest one I could find on Amazon (it was $10 I think) and it is EXACTLY the same one as I bought for DH's PS3 that I got him which was $100.

Thanks for the idea; i just got it on amazon for 28 dollars and with shipping to get to me tomorrow it as 48.. next time i can get it for free shipping but I needed it tomorrow.

Use monoprice.com next time... we always buy the cables from them and they are only a couple bucks!!! no exaggeration!

From what I was told. The longer the HDMI cable the quality decreases. Not sure if the tech was stating fact or his opinion

also, the picture you get from component video cables is just as good.... only difference is you have to run 2 separate cables... 1 with 3 connections (video) and 1 with 2 connections (audio)... so HDMI has the added benefit on carrying both signals on one cable...
the LONG you run the cable the higher quality cable i would buy....
The HDMI specification does not define a maximum cable length. As with all cables, signal attenuation becomes too high at a certain length. Instead, HDMI specifies a minimum performance standard. Any cable meeting that specification is compliant. Different construction quality and materials will enable cables of different lengths. In addition, higher performance requirements must be met to support video formats with higher resolutions and/or frame rates than the standard HDTV formats.
The signal attenuation and intersymbol interference caused by the cables can be compensated by using Adaptive Equalization.
HDMI 1.3 defined two categories of cables: Category 1 (standard or HDTV) and Category 2 (high-speed or greater than HDTV) to reduce the confusion about which cables support which video formats. Using 28 AWG, a cable of about 5 meters (~16 feet) can be manufactured easily and inexpensively to Category 1 specifications. Higher-quality construction (24 AWG, tighter construction tolerances, etc.) can reach lengths of 12 to 15 meters. In addition, active cables (fiber optic or dual Cat-5 cables instead of standard copper) can be used to extend HDMI to 100 meters or more. Some companies also offer amplifiers, equalizers and repeaters that can string several standard (non-active) HDMI cables together.

I have a question for you since you seem to know a lot about it
I have a plasma tv
we have cablevision
we have an HD box
we have a sony HDMI cable
when we plug it into out tv (its short in length) it makes the picture bounce up and down a bit and the sound is much lower, any idea why this happens? I'm sure its cable but maybe its something we are doing. we unplugged it because its really annoying
and my 2nd isses-My MIL has a LCD tv and her HDMI cable wasn't plugged in. we plugged it in for her and it caused all different wacky problems, with the picture not coming on because it would jump to a different input on the tv. when we would change to that input there was no sound. then we would go back and select the original input and it would work. again its a short cable, not sure of the brand and its cablevision. we eventually unplugged that too

what brand TVs are they? there are some brands of TV that have similar issues to the ones you described...
for instance: my sister has a philips and i have an LG... same cable service, same package, same DVR box etc... same cables even... she has issues with the audio dropping out and the picture getting pixelated (digital static) ive never had an issue... in cases like that i always recommend using component video cables. you would never notice the difference between HDMI and component..
i doubt its anything you are doing... have you tried a different HDMI cable? or the same HDMI cable on a different TV?

HDMI cables are necessary but DO NOT buy them from Best Buy! The mark-up is ridiculous. They're digital cables, and digital is digital. Buy them online for like $10 and get the same quality as the suckers who pay over $100 at big chain stores.
