Honestly, I would be FURIOUS if DH bounced a check. I worked very hard to get my credit rating (and his) where it is today, so I would be very upset if he bounced a check. Although he never writes checks without telling me first so it wouldn't happen. But I did get upset with him when he missed a credit card payment a few months back.

so wait, bouncing a check effects your credit rating??? its not like it went to collections or anything, she called me about it and i told her to just tell her bank to redeposit it which they did and all was fine.

i hear ya as far as missing a payment, that i would be pizzed about too! cause that i KNOW effects your credit so i would never do that.

bouncing a check doesnt effect your credit rating - unless you leave the account overdrawn and the bank sends it for collections (which would take a while)

You should def get overdraft protection...its great for those times when you do make an honest mistake and bounce a check or use your debit card too much

I think it's completely irresponsible.

sometimes it's an honest mistake.

I agree...this is harsh, its sometimes a mistake not irresponsibility at ALL....

Also it will never affect your credit rating for those who wonder...Unless you DONT cover the check but the banks dont report to credit companies....

IT happens, its happened to me a few times in my life due to just errors on my part.....

I used to do this ALOT but haven't in a really long time. My bank charges 32 per occurrence, which really adds up! Chat Icon

Re: Have you ever accidentally bounced a check?

Uh yeah...know why? When I lived at home - my dad paid the car insurance and then I paid my dad. Well, he decided to keep ALL of my checks and then cash like 6 months at a time - so $140 x 6 months!!!!!! So, all of a sudden I got this big debit and I was totally bounced....my dad was like, that shows you to balance your checkbook better! LOL - I was in college and worked part time - I was SO mad at him!!!!!!!

Sorry but I'm almost 40 yrs old and I never bounced a check in my life. If you keep up on your check book it won't happen. I like my money...I don't want to give $30 to the bank because I didn't balance my book and ended up bouncing a check. JMO

good for you- but sometimes mistakes happen- it's not the end of the world

EXACTLY.....not the end of the world, will not affect your credit rating,....I would not lose sleep over it, just be more careful in the future Chat Icon

Re: Have you ever accidentally bounced a check?

I did when we first opened our joint checking account after getting married. We deposited the money we got as gifts and the bank didn't bother to tell us it wouldn't all clear at once. Apparently, it was going to take a few weeks before all of the money was in the account. So we bounced our first mortgage payment because of it.
Totally not our fault - but it happened. The bank removed the charges.

Re: Have you ever accidentally bounced a check?

I've never bounced a check but I had a screwup/close call. That was when I had the same style checkbook and same style checks for business and personal. I realized it and then moved money really fast. Now I have totally different style checks for each account and I don't use the same bank for both (unrelated reasons for not using the same bank).

Mistakes happen but there are people who repeatedly bounce checks or repeatedly go into overdraft I don't understand that.

I just bounced one and DH is furious! I dont see the big deal. I forgot I wrote a check and immediately put the money in so they could just redeposit the check. I dont get worked up about it, but DH does.

Do you get embarassed or stressed about that kinda stuff?

ETA: its my old checking account that i only keep around cause my life insurance is linked to it. i only put money in it if i write a check, and in this instance i completely forgot.

It happens.... Chat Icon

However to avoid future occurences, I'd look into linking it to a current account or see if they offer overdraft so you are covered.

A bounced check doesn't show up on your credit rating.

It *can* be reported to ChexSystems, which can cause you problems attempting to open bank accounts at a new bank. However, if she immediately redeposited the funds, it likely wasn't reported. Usually just one mistake won't ruin your Chex Systems report. It certainly won't ruin your credit report.

Re: Have you ever accidentally bounced a check?

I have overdrafted my account countless times.
It's a lot harder to balance a checkbook when you use your debit card for EVERYTHING!
I need overdraft- how do I get this?
Can they add that to my account for a fee, or is it a part of a special checking account?

It will nt effect your credit SCORE, but it blemishes your credit with the bank- ie. if you do it all the time, you aren't favorable to get a loan through that bank.

Additionally, unless the CC payment was 30 days late, it won't show up on your credit report either.

Mistakes happen to the best of us. As long as you view it as an isolated mistake and not something you'll make a habit out of, you'll be fine. You do want to take it seriously b/c if you accumulate a bad ChexSystems report, you can have difficulty opening new bank accounts at most banks. This one mistake isn't fatal though. Chat Icon

Re: Have you ever accidentally bounced a check?

Yes and it was all DH's fault. He grabbed my checkbook by accident to write out the rent check. Two days later, I happened to open my checkbook and see the check he wrote and signed. I immediately went online to transfer the money from his account to mine but the check had already tried to pass. Chat Icon
