Every wedding I was in we got Jewelry.
I usually wear it again as well.
I also have two engraved jewelry boxes that I really like.

3x. The first time, we were given gloves and earrings to match the dress. The other two times I received jewelry sets that I never wore again.
I gave pampering gift bags with bath salts, lotion, body wash and cute hand soaps. They also got a piece of jewelry depending on the type of dress they were wearing. The jewelry was made with smoky topaz and they've all worn it again.

i have been in two bridal parties.
1) the girl paid for part of our dresses and to be honest it was the best gift ever. Its soo$$ to be in a bp and that helped out a bit plus she got us a small basket form bath and body too.
2) the other one my friend made us all scrapbooks of us over the years. very nice and a good keepsake.

I have been a bridesmaid 2 times
the first time I got- a bathrobe, earing to wear that day (which I could wear again- but I can no longer wear drop down earings) and JCrew flip flops
the second time- beach bag, towel, book, JCrew Flip flops

I gave my girls-
~Jewelry I had designed for them. Each piece was individual.
~L.L. Bean tote bag with their monogram on it
~Pampering products (foot salts, bath fizzie, that sort of thing)
~Photo albums with pictures of us growing up together (each one had different pics in it with me with my BM from various points in our lives)
The gifts I have received have been
~a coach wristlet
~a Vera Bradley overnight bag
~A shawl and earrings to use day of wedding..

I am a BM for hte first time this Saturday!
I got my girls a sort of non traditional gift.
They have bottle openers ont he bottom! Most comfortable flip flops ever.
I only spent about $60 per girl, more on my sister/ MOH, who I also got a photo bag for.

I also got my best gift of all from BF which was my wedding binder that was literally attached to my hip for the entire year I planned my wedding!

I was the MOH once and got my day of necklace. For my BF wedding I got a nice coach wristlet.
For my wedding my MOH got a leather coach bag. The girls all received Victoria Secrets lounging sets with matching flip flops, VS lotion spray and bubble bath in a make-up case and a gift certificate to get their nails done and their day of necklace and godiva's

I was just in my best friends wedding last November.
She gave us our favorite scent from bath and body. I loved that!
A pair of those slip on slippers thingies from Target in brown, to match our dresses. They were so comfy AND they had treads on the bottom so we were able to run around and dance in them.
And finally she gave us all little coach wristlets to hold our makeup, cell phones or whatever in brown to match the dress.
All of these gifts were just perfect and I still use all 3 all of the time. Well the perfume is already gone though. LOL

For all the weddings I've been in I've received jewelry of which I still wear.
As for what I gave...
Old navy flip flops - they all still wear them
Brown tote bags - they all used them the day of and still use them
Jewelry in little organza sacks - I know my sister and SIL still wear their jewelry since I've seen them wear it, I'm not sure about the others.
I think if you consider who you're buying for and chose what you get them that way, you'll be successful in picking out things they'll use in the future.
