Has anyone else lost their job after maternity leave?

Well, I haven't lost mine yet, but I feel like they are totally doing everything in their power to "push me out".

To make a long story short, BEFORE I went on ML, they told me I could come back in a different position, where I could have clients nearby to my house, and also do most of my work from home (I'm connected to the company server).

Well, I've been back a little more than a month and they have totally changed everything on me.

Basically they want me in the office everyday and they are forcing me to take clients all over NYC including the Bronx/Westchester border. (I live in Suffolk).

I got in a fight with the VP on Friday and basically walked out and told him I would speak to him again when I was calmer.

I am so ****** I really don't want to work for these people anymore and I am willing to take the pay cut. Has anyone else gone through something similar?

So sorry to hear! Everything seemed different when I went back but I decided to step back and ride it out bc I knew I was emotional from just having a baby. Dont get heated and make rash decisions while you are angry. Take a deep breath...tommorrows a new day. Hear out what they have to say...Chat Icon

Re: Has anyone else lost their job after maternity leave?

I understand your point, but trust me, it's not hormones right now. They are just being completely unreasonable with me. No one in my new position has had to do the things they are asking of me. I really think they are trying to push my limits to make me quit so they don't have to continue to pay me "a F/T salary". This actually came out of the VP's mouth on Friday (he's paying me a F/T salary so I need to do what they are asking because "I'm not being a team player otherwise").

Keep in mind as well that everyone else in this role also works from home and one person has never had a full caseload, never taken clients in the city either and they didn't do these things to her.

I will ride it out because I have to, but I am not going to bend over backwards for them and do some of the things they are asking. I also have sent out 20 resumes this weekend because this is complete BS.

I have heard from a few others actually who were going through similiar situations recently. IMO, it does sound like they are trying to get rid of you. I know the field, so let me know if I can help in any way.Chat Icon

Re: Has anyone else lost their job after maternity leave?

Thanks everyone for your support and to those of you who have sent me FMs with suggestions. I am excited because I actually have an interview lined up already tommorrow afternoon with a reputable agency here on the island!

I went out and met with a client this morning, and then have just been "working from home" avoiding the office, and it's really helped me to clear my head a lot with this.

I am supposed to meet with my supervisor on Wednesday to "talk more".

That sucks, what was their response about the previous arrangements that were made when you returned? How could they say all that and not follow through?

Sounds like they feel they are not getting their moneys worth by letting you do that arrangement and that maybe others complained about it?? Well I'm glad you are doing what you have to do. Good Luck!

I was laid off over the phone while still on leave. They got rid of almost my whole department.

No one else would complain though because everyone works from home who has my job. It's one of the "perks" when we aren't seeing clients.

I used to be in a supervisory role though so they (admin) told me that "I am the only one qualified to do a lot of things" which is BS.

They also reduced my salary BTW when I went back!

A major thing is I am one of the only people who doesn't have a full caseload yet because I went back a month ago. I have told them as a "compromise" I am willing to take clients in Queens because they are getting a lot of referrals for that area. The Bronx/Westchester is just TOO far though.

A BIG mistake on my part is that I never got anything in writing, so basically they are trying to get me to be the "gal friday" to do everything they don't want to hire anyone else to do!!!

Sorry I definitely know how you feelChat Icon I haven't gone back yet, but definitely ever since I told them I was pg I felt like they were treating me differently and a coworker even told me she noticed. So I'm sure what you feel is legitimate and not just emotions.

I sometimes feel like they might be resentful of having to give us time off and hold our position etc.

Not while on maternity leave...

After 3 years of working from home (my salary and position were based on me working from home). My company told me over the phone that I would have to come to the client site every day. I told them no thanks and quit. It was hard to give up a huge paycheck, but it's opened up so many other doors for me/us.

Good luck, and don't let them push you around!

Re: Has anyone else lost their job after maternity leave?

Well, I went on an interview yesterday and have to cross that place off the list. I had a hard time keeping my jaw from dropping to the floor when I heard how LOW the salary was.

I guess I will keep looking!

After I went back, one of the female big-wigs who works in my company zillions of hours a week was asking me how I was "adjusting" to being back to work. I told her I was fine, my family watches him and I enjoy being at work.

She went on and on about how it is so great for a woman to be back at work, they never should feel guilty leaving their child, they need to be away from the child for long periods of time blah blah blah blah blah.

I think because a lot of the higher ups where I am are married to the job, that is where this may be coming from.

Re: Has anyone else lost their job after maternity leave?

Update again:

I met with my supervisor yesterday and it went pretty well.

I explained my concerns and he has agreed to work with me and my needs.

I really hope he isn't BSing me!

I am still going to send out resumes/go on interviews though because you never know when a better opportunity will come along.
