GRRR....Would you be upset?

So....my nephew's 2nd birthday was on Saturday. We were invited to BIL's house for an informal "party" - pizza and ice cream cake...of course we said yes, as DD loves to play with her cousins. There are 3 kids in this household...a 5 year old, the 2 year old and an 8 month old.

When DH, DD and I were on our way, they called and asked us to pick up soda and a bottle of Gatorade...no problem....We get there to find out that the Gatorade is for the 8 month old (don't ask)...who has had diarrehea and been throwing up for 2 days.....nice, thanks for the heads up!!!

Then, after we've been there for a little while, future SIL comes out with the 8 month old in her arms and and "Oh, I guess he's got PINK EYE too...(2 year old) had it last week and the Dr. gave us extra medicine figuring the others would get...we have an extra tube you can take home with you just in case DD gets it too" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DH and I took DD and left shortly thereafter....but last night, it was obvious that it was too late...I was up holding my 15 month old's head as she threw up all night long....and now has diarrehea....And we found out MIL is sick as a dog too...I'm waiting for it to hit me....

I was SOOOOO mad...DH wants to say something to his brother, but he doesn't want to start a fight....but seriously, how do you KNOW your kids are sick with a stomach virus and pink eye and still invite people over??? Especially given that we always have the "official" birthday party at Thanksgiving dessert, so it really wasn't necessary for us to come over on his actual birthday (not that the 2 year old would even know the difference!)

UGH!!! Okay - vent over...carry on...

I would be so mad. I would def have DH talk to his brother. He can do it in a non confrontational way. I am sure his bro wouldn't want to come to your house if your DD was sick and risk getting his three kids sick, right?

Re: GRRR....Would you be upset?

I would be pizzed too. That's rude.
The other day I was at my dr's office and had DD with me...she has a cold and there was another little girl in the waiting room that wanted to play with DD but I told her father that DD was sick....It's just common courtesy IMO. Sorry I hope your DD feels better soonChat Icon

OMG...even if DS has the sniffles or what may be a cold coming on I will either reschedule or give the company a heads up and let them decided. I expect the same in return. Some people are unbelievable! Chat Icon

I would be SO ANGRY!! Especially with the holiday coming. If it was me and my family, I would tell my DH that it is his child that is sick because of them and he better mention it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: GRRR....Would you be upset?

I would be upset too! Who wants to see their baby sick!

What an awkward situation but this is what I would do....

I would speak to SIL (please don't leave it up to the men to resolve ha ha).

I would say, "we are all in the same boat now that we all have kids. Since our common goal is to keep everyone healthy, let us make it a point in the future to inform eachother when a child is sick. This gives the other the opportunity to cancel if we feel the risk of passing the sickness along is too risky. No hard feelings!"

If she doesnt get the hint or is offended by your suggestion, well then that makes her an unreasonable person (and a poopy head!).

Re: GRRR....Would you be upset?

I'd be mad. I don't know that I'd confront them now but I'd certainly ask if everyone was healthy before every future visit. It is extremely inconsiderate for them not to tell you before you arrived between the severe stomach virus AND PINK EYE!?!?!?! Come on! It makes me mad just to think about it, both are so contagious.

My and DH's families are very good about communicating illness and knowing when we need to stay away or reschedule. I skipped out on group trick or treating because DD had a very runny nose and a 3 month old was there, just to be on the safe side.

Re: GRRR....Would you be upset?

I would be so angry! I would have walked out the minute anyone said vomiting however and I wouldn't care if they thought I was rude. My SIL have a rule that we call each other with any symptoms the girls may have and the parent gets to choose if we want to get together.

HOW COULD YOU DO THAT????!!!!Chat Icon

Upset? No, I'd be furious. There is no reason to have other people subjected to that.

Parties can be postponed - particularly house parties.

Re: GRRR....Would you be upset?

I agree - upset no- FURIOUS yes!!!! Some people are so wrapped up in their lives that the don't think of the consequences of their actions on others. We had this issue with SIL - we went over several years ago to find out SIL had stomach flu the day before and the kids were sick with it 2 days before that - and she made her OWN food that we had already eaten 1/2 of by the time she told MIL. So we don't go there as much - good thing we backed out last year b.c we found out from MIL that they were all sick 1-2 days before again. It is totally understandable that kids get sick - but if you know your children are ill than you should reschedule or cancel depending on the event.

Some parents also forget that just b.c your child has a slight cold that the next child they expose their kid to might not be so lucky and could end up with pneumonia.

I would be livid and would most definitely give them a call and tell them how inappropriate and inconsiderate it was.

That's exactly what I said...my best friend and I haven't seen each other in quite some time....her son was sick and then DD was sick...and we don't bring the kids around each other when they have something...because we don't want to get each other or our kids sick....no matter how much we want to spend time together...
