"grills" on windows - edited to add another question-

hey all

just bought a house and we're putting in all new casement windows. we're trying to decide on whether or not to get those 'grills' on them. the siding we're going to choose is going to be the one that looks like shingles for the front, and regular siding around the rest of the house. im going to have the white thick borders around the windows, no shutters.

if you have those grills on your casement windows, do you regret it? do you like them? how do you windex the windows with them on?

anything else you might be able to tell me would be great

question: those with the removable grills, are they hard to remove and snap back in?

Re: "grills" on windows

I moved into a house in march and they had them, except they were removable wood ones that were on the insdie.

I riped them out as soon as we got keys. I hated them, but they were also set up to make the diamond shape, which I really didn't like.

If you think you might like them, get the wooden ones made (I believe that would be seperate from the window co) and at least then you can remove them if you choose too

Re: "grills" on windows

i would get them only if removable. Everyone is liking the "cottage" look now but tastes change. My parents have the wood ones and removed them after a few years of having them because they felt like they were in a cage.

Re: "grills" on windows

The previous owners installed them in our house and I really like them. The grates are removeable so they are easy to clean.

Re: "grills" on windows

I have them and love them. They add so much character. But the ones we have are INSIDE the window, so when you wash the windows, they do not get in the way. Our old ones they snapped on to the windows (anderson) and those were a PIA. I love them.

Re: "grills" on windows

I have the cedar shakes on all sides of my house like you were describing and we have the grills on all windows, even the two sliders. We have a colonial and I feel it works nicely with our design. We also didn't do shingles, and went with keystones above the windows and garage. Pella makes them so the grills are in the inside of the window which makes cleaning easy. My mom had the removable ones on her windows and I don't care for them. Pics in my house album.
