Grass clippings?
For those that mow their own grass... what do you do with the grass clippings?

Re: Grass clippings?
Leave 'em where they lie. I mulch the grass. Less work for me, better for the grass, better for the environment.
Another good option is to start a compost area.

Ditto. It's a natural compost for your yard.

Re: Grass clippings?
DH bags them up and puts them out with the recycle pick up. This year, the TOB started picking up grass clippings, leaves, twigs, etc as part of a new program. We have a dog and found by leaving the clippings out, he just tracked it all back in the house and made a mess.

Huntington will not pick up grass...you can bring it to the dump, but it costs $2/bag or something
we leave our clippings to compost. If they are longer clippings, I sometimes rake up a bit and use it as mulch around my raised beds or dump into the compst bin.

DH thought that Brookhaven wont pick them up...he said he has left bags out and they just leave them there and will only take the brush- not grass- do you know if they have to be packaged in a certain way?
he cant leave them on the lawn for some reason and we really don't have room on our property to create a compost pile... there is a small area next to our shed that I told him to dumb them, but he said that he thinks they will start to smell really bad as they decompose... does anyone know if that is true?

Re: Grass clippings?
If you make sure that the water from the shed roof doesn't drain on top of the compost pile, you'll be fine. I built two compost piles last summer and have finished compost on the bottom now that I use for my plants.
If you don't aerate it at all, the grass might compact and then it might smell. I put all yard waste in there to break it up. Leaves, clippings, shredded paper. Or you could take a pitchfork and just put holes in the pile once in a while.

Thanks for this info! DH wants to know if your pile is in the shade or sun?

Re: Grass clippings?
I use a manual mower and I just leave the grass where it falls. It is a lot better for the grass and the environment

Re: Grass clippings?
We've been leaving them in the lawn but I keep wondering whether there is just more grass blowing around, making my grass allergy feel worse .

Mine are in part shade, they get about 3-4 hours of sun. A lot of factors will make it degrade faster but it will all degrade eventually. The smell comes in when a pile is staying too wet for too long. I've never had that problem because there is air all around the sides of mine, no excess water from runoff, and I do aerate it occasionally.
I take all the waste paper from work and shred it with my $30 cross cut shredder from Staples, as well as all the household cardboard and paper. That, along with the grass clippings, leaves, prunings from plants and coffee grinds are all we really do. The plastic chicken wire is so cheap that I just cut a hole in the bottom and scoop out the compost when the pile is done.

Re: Grass clippings?
We bag it, we may mulch it every three weeks though to help out the grass.
