Gotta love her...
My MIL that is. So, my shower was this past weekend. I walk in about 30 minutes after it starts. The room is packed and everyone starts cheering when I walk in. I begin my walk around the room with kisses and hugs and hellos for everyone. About 5 minutes after I arrive, my MIL stands up and starts tapping her glass with a fork saying "I have an announcement. Can I have everyone's attention please?" I, naturally, think she is going to make a toast or say something nice about her first grandchild. And then....she said it when the whole room was looking at her and everyone had grabbed a glass........"I'd like to announce that my neice is pregnant!!!" I was in shock and didn't know how to handle it. The only thing I could think of was to walk over to the pregnant neice and say congrats to her quietly as everyone began talking again.
I told DH and he was MAAAAD!!!  I am not the kind that seeks out attention but I just can't believe she would do that?? I mean, they were there for 30 minutes before I got there. They could've announced that news before I arrived! Unbelievable!

Your MIL's a real peach and she must be from the same fruit tree that my MIL is! My MIL also made an announcement about her niece being PG at my shower, but it was at the end of my shower. However not in the dramatic fashion that your MIL did! The announcement turned around and bit her in the arse though because her niece was furious that she let the cat out of the bag. She had told my MIL in secret and wasn't ready to share it with the rest of the family. Both niece and her mother, my MIL's sister-in-law, told her off and I have to admit I kind of enjoyed it.

Being at the shower and witnessing this act of total stupidity - i can tell you that we the guests were (at least the ones at my table) HORRIFIED that this woman had the nerve to stand up and announce this before Krista even made it around the room to greet her guests! I damn near choked on a grape!
I dont think your mom heard it though - and i'm soooooo glad for that!
You handled it with class and grace and no one thought for a second that you were taken aback or steamed at your MIL for it. You're a better woman than I, my dear. I dont know how you did it.
and btw - it was a beautiful day for Krista and baby Bean; despite her MIL's obvious lack of tact in that particular moment. She had a ton of family and friends there to celebrate and everyone is soooo super excited to meet the new baby.

OMG, pretty unreal!! That reminds me of the time my one cousin announced at his own brother's wedding that he had eloped and gotten married! Total lack of class. Sorry you had to deal with that, I'm sure the guests were even shocked that she would announce that at your baby shower.

Wow, that is totally tactless. Thats like another couple announcing their engagement at someone else's wedding. I am sure your guests thought it was tasteless as well. Sorry that happened!

that is insane... However, she did put her insanity on full display for all of your family and friends.
My mom went to a shower this past weekend, and I had given her the OK to tell her close friends-- and even then, she didn't want to tell her friend I was prego at her daughter's shower.

Despite the crazy announcement, the day was AMAZING! I had a great time and I like to this my guests did too!
Unforunately, my mother did hear her! She was very upset about it but contained herself appropriately. She vented to me about it later. I think the guests had the same response as Whit and thought that MIL looked like a fool.

Eh, depends on the day. For the most part, she is fine. We have had out major blow-outs, mostly surrounding the time when we planned our wedding. But, since announcing our pregnancy, she has been fine. With that being said, she made the shower planning process very difficult for my mother. She can be very passive aggressive and I tend to think the whole announcement was a shot at my mom.
